ESPN really dropped the ball tonight (2 late games instead of 2 early games)

Curious as to why ESPN/ESPN2 chose to show two LATE games, one a meaningless Angels/A's game (the night AFTER the Angels clinched) when they could have showed an additonal EARLY game on ESPN2 that actually IMPACTED THE PLAYOFF RACE. They had Yankees/Orioles, White Sox/Tigers, Devil Rays/Indians, Mets/Phillies, and Astros/Cardinals to choose from. They missed a chance for some big ratings. I know an additional early game would have drawn better than Angels/A's the night after the Angels clinched. What were they thinking?

Which games are shown are prearranged. Two/Three weeks ago when the decisions were made to televise the games they did, they had to make educated guesses as to the impacts of the respective games to the playoff picture. They can't change which game is shown based on the previous/prior nights' games. It would be a planning nightmare for ESPN (to get their talent and production crew across country or where ever) and for the local networks (who may or may not televise the game based on their agreements with the league and the team).

ESPN2 also showed a college football game, Miami, Ohio vs. Cincinnati, which was movwed to Wednesday night several months ago, at the request of ESPN2, so it could be shown on television. Since it was ESPN/ESPN2's decission to move the game to Wednesday night in the first place, they could not of decided at the last minute to show an early baseball on ESPN2 instead of the Miami-Cincinnati college football game.

You missed one other big game last night (September 28th)...Toronto at Boston.

This Saturday (October 1st), Fox's final weekend of regular-season regional telecasts will include two big American League games: Yankees at Boston (one of those two teams could be in a position to win the division) and White Sox at Cleveland (depending on tonight's and tomorrow's games, Cleveland could need a victory to keep their "wild-card" hopes alive).

According to Zap 2 It.com's online listings) ESPN 2 has two baseball games listed for Sunday afternoon (October 2nd), the final day of the regular season. Although ESPN has a bull-riding marathon scheduled for Sunday afternoon, it's quite possible that at least some of it might be pre-empted to broadcast a baseball game. Given that the White Sox/Cleveland begins at 1:05 EDT and the Yankees/Boston game at 2:05 EDT, it's possible that both games will be shown live on ESPN's networks (one game on each) if either the AL East and/or AL "wild-card" has yet to be decided.

He didn't miss it. ESPN was already carrying the game. Had to turn off the audio because the moron-moron tandem of Boomer Berman and Rick Suckcliffe were on the call.
 
Truthfully,now. Outside of New York, Boston, Chicago and parts of Los Angeles, and a bandwagon in Northeastern Ohio...does anyone really care about Major League Baseball?

The Braves won their 14th straight division crown this week. A small gathering was reported at Turner field...

I guess if you call a crowd that would have sold out half the stadiums in MLB a "small gathering" then, yes there was a small gathering. In reality, it was a crowd of nearly 30,000. Not to mention the strong ratings the Braves get across the country on TBS.

Speaking of TBS, what a terrible broadcast schedule!! They frontload and carry hardly any games during September! I realize no one knows when the Braves will clinch, etc., but come on ... they have to carry at least some games during this period.
As for ESPN, Cubs-Houston is one of the games listed to be shown Sunday (according to cubs.com). Of course, it's also on WGN so pretty much everyone who wants to see the game would see it anyway regardless of what ESPN does.

Yeah, MLB only lets them carry like 80 games, so they elect to put most of them on the front end and allow their new programming that debuts in late summer to take hold on a regular schedule. In the southeast, most cable systems carry Turner South, so most homes in their key fan base see all of the games.

I should have clarified my comments. Braves fans are notorious for not showing up for the early round playoff games. Count the chunks of empty seats you ll most likely find during round 1.

Excellent points, but it'd still be nice if TBS could save a couple games for the final week of the season. I'm not a Braves fan but I still watch them second-most behind the Cubs.
Now maybe you can answer this ... why can satellite providers not carry Turner South outside the Southeast? Even the RSNs are available elsewhere via certain packages.

All I'm saying is, every single playoff crowd the Braves have drawn would have sold out places like Fenway Park. Having empty seats is something you deal with when you have the one of the largest capacities in the majors (50,000+).

They can, but its not primarily a sports station. They carry 40+ Braves games and a bout 30 Hawks and Thrashers games, but they mostly show "Southern Living" type shows that nobody outside of the south could bear to watch. I mean, I'm as redneck as they come and I find all of their other programming unbearable.

But it is available to all cable companies.
