ESPN Yanks Hank Williams Jr. From "Monday Night Football"

I remember quite a few seasons back, when MNF was on ABC, and they went Hank-less for a season. They featured bands like Def Leppard doing an intro before each game. Then they brought Bocephus back. And then he opened his big fat mouth and turned into Charlie Daniels.

At least NBC doesn't have to worry about Faith Hill.

As sure as the sun rises from the East... Hank Williams' MNF theme will return to ESPN's cablewaves.
Book it as a guarantee.

If it isn't back by this week, next week tops. The entire season of intros are probably in the can anyways. ESPN is in no position to bleed money for re-done intros after hyper-extending themselves on their new MNF contract and having zero NBA coverage to air next month. Cable operators are all ready preparing packages that does not include the cushy $4.00+/mo. subscriber fee ESPN has enjoyed for decades from every cable subscriber whether or not they even watch ESPN.

The tides are changing in the sports tier landscape and it's about friggin time if you ask me.

Here's my prediction: ESPN cans the song, and Hank Jr. resurfaces with a reworked version of one of his other hit songs, "Family Tradition" - only it'll be called "Football Tradition." And it'll debut on Thanksgiving Day... on Fox.

Eh?

What gets me is why these actors, singers and sports figures say crap about world leaders like the president.I know they have the right of freedom of speach and some times they are right. But if they in the public eye they are watched with a microscope.and pay for it at the end.I do like Hank Williams JR and also like the Dixie Chicks. but they should keep their opinions to themselves.
Kind of along the same lines, I don't know why the networks solicit the opinions of celebrities? Are the opinions of celebrities worth more than the opinions of the rest of us? All men are created equal, but apparently some are more "equal" than others! ::)

Monday Night Football needs a new theme, and this is just a way of calling attention to it. Media 101, guys.
Did Monday Night Football even HAVE a "theme" before Hank, Jr., came along? Probably some forgettable instrumental, if anything.

Yes they still use the same theme they used on ABC. Da-da-da-da. You'd know it if I played it. Yes it is an instrumental. But very recognizable and they use it now for the bumpers going into commercials.

The same one that they use for World News Tonight, Nightline, and even for ABC radio news? OK, got it.

Nope. Those are news themes. This one's only for MNF, and goes back to the 60s. They also used it on the Wide World of Sports.

Perhaps ESPN could use Kenny Chesney's "The Boys Of Fall" as Monday Night Football's new theme. Sure it's about high school football and it's a ballad but include some words, liven it up and refer it about the NFL then I'm sure it would work.

Or have other country singers do Hank Jr.'s song: Blake Shelton, Trace Adkins, Brad Paisley, Tim McGraw and even Kenny Chesney doing it come to mind.

I never cared for the opening song anyway.
Guess some guys were half baked one night when they suddenly came up with that idea.

Given the title - and admitting I've yet to hear the song - I thought it was about baseball.

Hank and ESPN have officially parted ways, each taking "credit" for the parting. The MNF theme will no longer be used since Williams owns the rights to the song.

Sez Hank: “After reading hundreds of e-mails, I have made MY decision,” Williams said in a statement to the Associated Press. “By pulling my opening Oct 3rd, You (ESPN) stepped on the Toes of The First Amendment Freedom of Speech, so therefore Me, My Song, and All My Rowdy Friends are OUT OF HERE. It’s been a great run.”

ESPN informed him Thursday morning that his services are no longer required.

For all the Constitutionalists out there:

The First Amendment only forbids Congress from making any law that restricts freedom of speech.

No rule about ESPN. They can do what they want. It's their show. They don't use the public airwaves to broadcast it.

It really doesn't matter because Hank lives in Hank's world.

just imagine what would have happened to him if he had compared Hitler to Donovan McNabb
