EU wants to ensure independent media, tougher media mergers rules

Note this is in talks for now
BRUSSELS, Sept 16 (Reuters) - Media groups seeking to take over smaller rivals will have to make sure that their deals ensure media pluralism and safeguard editorial independence under draft rules announced by the European Commission on Friday.

The Media Freedom Act (MFA) is part of the European Union's strategy to prevent political interference in media outlets and spying on journalists and ensure transparent and non-discriminatory state advertising to media outlets.
The proposed rules come amid worries about media freedom in Hungary, Poland and Slovenia.

"Democracy will work only if journalists have the means and the necessary protection to keep in check those in power and those with power, be it political or economic actors," Commission Vice President Vera Jourova told a news conference.

This comes after TF1 and M6 stopped the deal

The merger of French broadcasters TF1 and M6 has been abandoned.

In the past few minutes, the channel’s owners have said the pair have called off the plan after appearing in front of the French Competition Authority earlier this month.

“Following the debates with the Authority and despite the additional remedies proposed, it appears that only structural remedies involving at the very least the divestment of the TF1 TV channel or of the M6 TV channel would be sufficient to approve the proposed merger,” they said Friday. “The parties have therefore concluded that the proposed merger no longer has any strategic rationale.”
The statement came from TF1 owner Bouygues and M6 owner RTL Group, who had been aiming to create a commercial broadcasting giant.
