Evanov Tries Out Hybrid AM HD Radio in Toronto

Evanov Communications recently switched on hybrid HD Radio on an AM station in Ontario. It’s believed to be the first AM to use HD Radio in Canada.

The company operates 16 radio stations across the country, including in the major markets of Winnipeg, Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa. Twelve of those are on FM, four on AM.

This is CHLO 530 Brampton, which can be heard widely at night. Said Paul Bury, the chief engineer: "Our own tests do confirm that the HD signal does not cope very well with any kind of interference past the 10 mV/m contour, including that which is generated by the new, fully electric transit busses the city has started rolling out."

He noted it's unlikely to do a full switch to all-digital, though it might be tried in certain dayparts.

I regularly listen to WWFD near the Washington D.C. market on my way to work. Where I commute along I-495 is well under 2.5mVm. Other than overpasses and high tension electrical lines, reception is surprisingly robust.

That makes no sense. Anyone that would switch from full MA3 digital to analog, then back to digital during certain dayparts, would be inviting a complete train wreck. You go all MA3, HD/IBOC, or remain analog.

Canada is very hesitant to allow multicasting on digital, whether HD Radio or ATSC. CTV could make CTV 2 nationwide on the x.2 subchannels. CBC could have Radio One on HD-1 and CBC Music on HD-2 on the original FM stations to maximize spectrum, instead of moving AMs to FM to provide both services in analog.

The FM HD stations I've encountered from Vancouver and Victoria have subchannels (except for one).

In Vancouver, 96.9 CJAX, 101.1 CFMI, and 103.5 CHQM all have HD1, HD2 and HD3. 104.3 CHLG has HD1 only.
In Victoria, 107.3 CHBE has HD1, HD2 and HD3, and they've had HD4 in the past.

I also know of 105.1 in Calgary and multiple other FMs in Toronto and Montreal that have HD subchannels.

Typically in Canada, HD subchannels are simulcasts of AM sister stations. CHBE HD4 had iHeart's 24/7 Christmas playlist in 2019.
