Eventual format of 101.1 FM: female news/talk/lifestyle?

Ick. I'm solidly in what appears to be the target demo and, maybe except for Robert Murphy (who I enjoyed when he was on Q101 in the 80's), the new format holds no interest for me whatsoever.

That's the projected format of WRXP in New York when Merlin's "magic" stunting dust settles...

Include me out.

LOL - my thoughts exactly! The "win" for us will be to have WBBM's format on FM soon. This new format on 101.1 sounds very unappealing to me. Then again, I am not in the target demo.......

You mean to tell me Randy Michaels (a.k.a. Mr. Testosterone) went through all this trouble to buy up these huge stations just to program Chick Chat? Strange world we live in.

Easier to attract hot little female interns with this format......

I still think it's a stunt. Randy has never tipped his hand before, why start now?

If they are going to do the chic chat, why hire the news staff they have? Use NBCs Today show as an example. Their news delivery has changed over the years. It's not hard news anymore. I can't imagine a 30 year old woman wanting old fashioned radio newscasts. As a matter of fact I can't imagine why anybody of any age would want to hear an old fashioned radio newscast. Times have changed, stop doing news they way we did 30,20,10, even five years ago.

Anyone remember that female-targeted lifestyle station CBS Radio tried a few years ago called "Blink 102.7"? Granted, it was more of a music-and-talk station, rather than a news-and-talk station...but regardless, the ratings were dismal, to put it nicely.

As it looks, Merlin Media is spending a TON of money on an experimental, niche format in two of the three biggest markets. How Merlin Media's investors were sold on this idea is anyone's guess.

And coincidentally, the now-former-Q101er Tim Virgin was a part of said "Blink's" airstaff!

I'm in total agreement with John. This - along with the same chatter of WRXP becoming a female talker - reeks of a total hoax.

And such a hoax fits Randy's M.O. perfectly. Read into and study his past career. Heck, he put the B-96-bashing HELL on 94.7 in the worst format stunt ever executed! Why would anyone who knows or has read about Randy even remotely believe this silly female chat talk rumor in the first place?

Agreed - I think it is a stunt... Will be shocked if it is not.

That format has been such a ratings winner the past several years on 107.1 in Minneapolis!

Chicago i think is a pretty hard market. What works in Los Angeles or New York can fail miserably here. Examples: Jack FM. Anybody remember how long the morning show "Bob and Tom" lasted on 103.5? Not long.. Us chicagoans are pretty picky and loyal folk. Hell, doesn't jewel osco have like 70 percent of the grocery market here? Unheard of anywhere else in the nation!! (I'm fairly certain that jewel osco is holding supervalu afloat. I've visited other supervalu stores.. Fail!)

Jack FM didn't work in New York, either.

And Bob and Tom may've worked if they had followed a "more music" morning show on Rock 103.5. Instead they had to follow Mancow at his height.

If they are going after a female audience, they should try and add
Kathy and Judy to the Line-up.

Old Chicago

With the way they were shoved out of WGN when Randy was in charge I think the answer to that is a definite 'hell no' on both of their parts. No way they go back to work for the guy who shoved them out without both a large contract and full show control.
