Exciiting new HD-2 Station in Dallas -- RISE FM 103.7-2

I have been listening to HD radio in the car and at home for almost 2 years now.

A CBS station in Dallas has finally hit the mark with me, with a fresh new exciting HD-2 station, RISE FM, at 103.7-2 has come one the scene!

The sound and the dynamics the engineers have tweaked for this station are great !

The playlist is Hard Rock, Christian Hard Rock. It's edgy, and it reminds me of the sound that the band The Offspring get from their edgy tracks....

NOW.... I'm really GLAD I have HD in the car, and at Home !!

As always, it is all about programming and care in delivering your product. You can tweak analog FM to sound wonderful as well. The problem is most stations have about 0.5 db of dynamic range and sound horrible. They don't have to. It is possible to back off on the Optimod, Omnia, DSP-X or other processor of choice. Running at 130% modulation may make you "distinctive" but it is not easy to listen to.

I agree Chuck. Like in Analog radio, there are mostly failures and a few good shots. IF this one actually gets any traction, it'll be due to available space. As there get to be a few more radios out there, the system will reach "Some" mass and start to impact programming. Maybe this is the start. (Or it might just be a whacko corporate programming wannabe guy who took over programming duties in lieu of a performance review increase.) :)

Could be like "Cop Rock". We better enjoy it while it lasts. Or maybe not...

Re: Exciting new HD-2 stations

Always nice to find some unique programming with some effort being put into it.

I guess I'm just a simple man :) I drove into Pittsburgh a few weeks ago, and found "The Blast" on 93.7 HD-2. They bill it as "Every party song ever played on B-94", and I gotta tell you, I was a pretty happy listener! It was a great upbeat mix of 80's, 90's, and 2000's songs, both rock and rhythmic. AND, they run ID's between every song, so it actually SOUNDS like a real radio station! When I was able to pull myself away from that, I also enjoyed the R&B channel on 92.9 HD-3, the Smooth Jazz channel on 104.7 HD-2, and the classic alt. rock channel on 105.9 HD-2.

It just felt like a "full" radio dial, format-wise. Is it okay that I had a decent listening experience? ...Or, does someone have a "Yeah, BUT..." to add?

I do, let me begin

Yeah but in Houston, all the HD stations sound like they came off a huge Hard drive filled with music. All the stations don't have that feeling that they are local, even though they do have ID's. I occasionally enjoy KKRW-HD2 The Loop, because of its variety. The only station I can say is local is probably KLTN-HD2, but then again, they are only re-broadcasting KRTX-AM.

Is RISE-FM a "canned" format, or do they have local content? Is it available to other markets?

They are going to be streaming RISE-FM over the Internet in the near future. I don't have a date yet.

Right Now... It's just all songs, with no Voice-Overs.... The song titles and artists are transmitted digitally with the songs.

There's another station in the Metroplex that plays Christian Hard Rock, and they do play local talent. 89.7, but they are not HD, and their signal is not as good or as strong as KVIL's. I much prefer listening to KVIL's HD signal. :D

Sorry, but it sounds to me like they are just another computer jukebox tucked away in a closet. Admittedly, I have not heard it. This one seems to have music you like. There are easily an equal number of people who would dislike the musical selections as much as you like them. Let us know in a couple of months if it still sounds fresh, or if they are playing the same 400 songs over and over. That is the acid test.

It is very possible to program a totally automated radio channel that is interesting to listen to. It just takes some creativity. Frequently, that creativity seems to be the real missing link in radio. Since you indicate that this one is nothing but music, there doesn't appear to be much about this that couldn’t be duplicated on an ipod.

The "ipod arguement".....

It just doesn't hold any water with me....

The fact that you are enjoying, really enjoying a song, that others are enjoying at the same time.... IE RADIO ..... Is part of the overall enjoyment......

How is this Lost on so many that Love to throw out the ipod rationale......

There's a time for individual listening....

And there's time for communal listening....

To me, that's what the Magic of Radio is about....

Some people forget.....

I neither work for KVIL or CBS.....

MY post was about radio in general vs. the ipod experience.... with reference to RISE FM.
