Hello Jersey Joe. I think your were doing a shift at 'DVL when I worked there, September to early November, 1975. I certainly remember your name and hearing you on the air before I started working in radio. Joe Dawson, Jim Roberts (Sal Russomano) and TV Teddie were working there at the time.

The Lakewood, Toms River and Atlantic City jocks sure seem to have fond memories. I don't see much posted by the Cumberland County guys. I swapped a few e-mails with Charlie Mills a couple months ago. He lives in the Tampa area, I'm living near Vero Beach, FL. I think George Benson had graduated to Philly by the time I was full time at 'MVB in fall '77.

Glenn is still in south Jersey and doing weekends at the shore somewhere as is Bobby "Brooks" D'Ipollito. I've lost track of everyone else.

Nice to see you're still kickin' around and following radio

George Benson was in Philly WAY before 1977. He was on WIBBAGE in the late 60's-early 70's era. And he was one of a line of Bobby Mitchells at WFIL in the late 60's. He was an unique character for sure, gracing the airwaves of 11-7 Jersey Shore during the mid 70's. I can hear him now...and see him mooching a hamburger from me.

That observation of how we all have great stories and shared a lot of trying experiences (and many good times too) is so spot-on. Many people who came from Northern NJ or NY or from Philly, and MOVED to the shore regions found there were other radio options than just the big boys. And MOST of us worked our buns off to make our marks. Some DID and continue to entertain in this thing we call radio...others moved on to better things...and still others ended up heading for tragic circumstances..just like everyone in life.

But working at smaller stations in Jersey was a very enriching experience that I know is shared by hundreds of other folks through the years. I wish there was a web-site dedicated to those Jersey stations of yore. I know there are SOME who have information about them, but they're spotty and not well read...

After being on the air for 39 years now (yikes) I STILL have people come up to me or call or write via email they remember things I said in '73! Stuff I don't even remember. THAT'S the power of good local radio.
The time has come for Jersey radio to get real local real fast and recapture that spirit.

BE BIG! Jay

Funny George Benson story - He was doing PM Drive at WPEN for a very short period of time..."very" short. I walked into the studio to follow him at 7pm. As I was preparing my show George hit the start button for a cart and it mis-fired or wasn't properly cued or whatever. George became very upset and began pounding on the control board so hard that the station lost audio! The engineer ran into the studio wondering what happened. He looked at me and looked at George and we both were in agreement that for some reason, mysterious as it seemed to be, the audio just suddenly disappeared.

Us old jocks had to stick together!

And I believe I had my moments of beating up a control board too LOL!

George was one of the most delightful people of all time. He may very well have also been the funniest, and what a set of pipes!

I still smile when I think of George having to stop at the 7-11 to get something to eat...on the way to lunch.

You're missed Benson burner. RIP.
