"Family Feud" To Move Tapings To Orlando

After years of taping shows in California, the popular game show - which will be fronted by its sixth host, Steve Harvey, come this fall - will relocate to Orlando, Florida, in the confines of Universal Studios Florida. While the production company will receive a tax credit for the move, the major items that factored into the decision is that it's easier to get studio audience participants from Universal than the streets of Los Angeles; and it would be an easier commute for Harvey, who also hosts a daily radio show from Atlanta.

given California's deteriorating finances, we have probably not seen the last of this

Remember, it was NBC Universal that actually set the precedent, moving "Deal To No Deal" to Connecticut. NBCU's Jerry Springer, previously based in Chicago, now also tapes in Connecticut, as do Maury Povich and Steve Wilkos.

Well, the shows that did move prior to those and "The Feud" didn't have such a downtrodden economy - although, as mentioned in the first post, it's not the main culprit of the move - but I'm sure it'll help the bottom line...

Every radio station and all but one TV station has moved out of Hollywood. Only one major movie studio actually operates in Hollywood.

Seems no one wants to do things there anymore. While it has its' nice parts, the Hollywood district of L.A. does have it's noticeable share of crime, slime, and panhandlers.

With the "tear down" mentality that exists, historic sites such as The Original Brown Derby, Schwab's Drug Store, and Norma Desmond's Sunset Blvd. mansion have been lost to strip malls and parking lots.

Hollywood has to be one of the most disappointing towns in the world for tourists. It didn't have to be like that.

I don't blame them one bit for moving Family Feud out of town.

The local politicians and business communities have only themselves to blame.

Phil Donahue moved from Cinncinati to Chicago to New York to Cancelled.
Johnny Carson moved from New York to Beautiful Downtown Burbank, CA.
And the Steve Wilkos show is still on?

That California has a distinct set of economic challenges and that Feud is moving to accomodate a new host does not mean the two are connected. Suppose for a minute O'Hurley hadn't wanted to move on; there's no reason to assume they'd be making the move.

You know times are tough in Hollywood when even the famed "Hollywood" sign is in danger of being taken down (thanks to a recent donation, it's "safe" for a few more years)...

There are a whole lot of states and counties out there where the politicians lay awake at night thinking up new
tax credits and incentives to lure production away from Hollywood. (I am writing this in Pittsburgh, which in some
ways has become Hollywood on the Monongahela). With their massive budget crunch California won't be able to
compete.

As someone who frequents into Hollywood every so often (and works just a few miles south in the Koreatown/Wilshire Center area), the luster has certainly been lost in that part of town in the last couple of decades. Yeah, it has still its share of venues (including the newer Hollywood & Highland retail/entertainment complex), but it's not a whole hell of a lot east of Vine Street to do, unless you're looking for some trouble. Right now, it seems the L.A. Live/Staples Center area in Downtown is one of the hotter spots in the city of Los Angeles, and stole of a lot of Hollywood's thunder. It's not to mention the refurbishing of some office buildings being converted into condos, or "lofts" as they call them.

Or, perhaps we are missing one obvious reason. Disneyworld attracts families. The show is "Family Fued". I could see them adding younger family members to the mix, as we all know, younger is better when it comes to advertisers. More teens, less grannies. That should be the new slogan for this tired (though, admittedly popular game show). Now if they could just find a host to last longer than two years...

Or the equally obvious reason--it works better for the host they selected and lets them draw from some new contestants (regardless of age) on the east coast for a change of pace.

It may seem like each of the last three hosts held down the job for that long, but Louie Anderson, Richard Karn and (at season's end) John O'Hurley all have hosted the show four years each.
