Family Radio: May 21, 2011 is Judgement Day

I posted the "he predicted the world would end, and for him it did" joke earlier, but I never knew its origin. Mark Evanier ( http://newsfromme.com ) fills in the blank - it was the voice of Rankin-Bass' "Frosty The Snowman", Jackie Vernon:

"He was a poet, a prophet, a philosopher. He prophesied that on May 1, 1951, the world would come to an end. And for him, it did. Because on that very day while eating a piece of cherry pie at the Automat restaurant in New York City, the little glass door snapped down, broke his neck. He didn't know you're supposed to take the food out."

Eh, funny joke if you know what the Automat was...

Look at San Francisco KFOG & KPFA mocked Mr Campings 610 Am Slogan I think CBS Will take over Mr Camping's Stations look at San Francisco he has a history there that CBS took over 97.3 in the 1970's and was switch to 106.9 in the 1970's. in the 2000's Mr Camping was switched to 610 am and CBS took over 106.9 for free fm and now its KCBS 106.9 FM.

Maybr 94.7 FM NYC Will be WCBS News just like in San Francisco 106.9 KEAR became KCBS 106.9

There were some people from Family Radio handing out pamphlets in Penn Station this weekend saying that May 21 is Judgement Day and to "tune to Family Radio at 94.7 for the details". That's one way to get a few listeners to the lowest rated FM station in NYC. It's the first time I've ever seen a Family Radio "street team".

If the world doesn't end on May 21, I wish they would sell the station on May 22.

Look at San Francisco Mr Camping has posted Billboards on Bay Area Freeways that Judgement day is coming on his flagship station 610 am and the Daily Show went after him for his Bay Area Stunt.

Earlier in the thread the song "Rapture" was mentioned. I was thinking if a station wanted to get rid of a religious/Christian format and wanted to stunt, the perfect song would be "Christianity is Stupid" by Negativland. The Bay Area-based media satirists found the speeches of the Rev.
Estus Pirkle, who told of Korean brainwashing (or something), with the victims being told "seventeen hours a day" nothing but "Christianity is stupid. Communism is good. Give up." Various versions of the song have chopped up the words to say "Communism is Christianity", "Stupid is good", etc. Anyway,
the band (at least one member of whom is an atheist) put music behind this detourned message.
Later, when they found out a tour they were going to make wasn't going to make money, they
perpetrated a hoax saying that "federal authorities" told them that supposedly a teen who murdered
his family, David Brom, had been inspired by the song.

Anyway, perfect song for stunting OUT of a Christianity format

Recto, CBS can't own 610...they had to sell it because of prohibited overlap with their TV/radio station cluster in Sacramento and Stockton, and nothing has changed there that would allow them to own it again now.

Michael Smerconish had Harold Camping on his show today, and asked him where he expected to be on May 22. Camping answered that he expects to be in heaven.

All joking aside, maybe someone needs to put this guy on a suicide watch. Seriously.

Well, it's official: Every single type of radio show you can think of has been giving this "rapture" its due diligence: from a new sports talk radio show in New York City (Ryan & Robin) to a regionally-syndicated country music show based in suburban Atlanta (they sampled both the REM and Skeeter Davis songs) to a sports talk show in San Antonio... this is the story that radio just loves talking about...

@Mr. Obral: Good guess, but no... The actual line - which was repeated in both the first and second verses of the REM song - is "listen to yourself churn." I'm afraid you have been eliminated from this "tournament, tournament, tournament." ;D

Update Philippine media ABS-CBN news has shown that Mr Campings Billboards are in the Philippines and located on Metro Manila area Freeways. In the ABS-CBN report Mr Camping's supporters are blocking lanes of metro manila freeways for Mr Camping's Publicity Stunt. Does Mr Camping really own a station in the Philippines?

I think that's from his shortwave signal. Interestingly enough, the license for the shortwave signal was recently renewed in an attempt to cover his tracks.

But here's the funny thing: both Family Radio outlets in Maryland are up for FCC renewal at the end of this month. I would be shocked NOT to see a challenge to those renewals pop up after nothing happens tomorrow night.

If the world's ending, he doesn't need to renew the licenses.

I can only imagine the First Amendment and religious freedom issues that withholding a license renewal might invoke.

I hope if WFRH in Kingston, NY will pull the plug on Family Radio after May 21st has passed. I guess that 91.7 should flip to "K-Love" at no time. WFRH, another Family Radio affiliate in the Hudson Valley at 91.7 still carries the message. But I'm not a Family Radio listener and I don't really care about Harold Camping either. This is pathetic.

I want to listen to Family Radio's "Open Forum" on Monday night. Wonder if it'll be full of calls from angry people who wasted their life savings. I want to hear how Harold Camping will spin this.

Here's a National Post article that has a pic of a billboard, presumably from the Philippines:

http://life.nationalpost.com/2011/05/21/apocalypse-later-surprise-no-sign-of-the-rapture-so-far/

The frequency given on the billboard is an AM frequency -- I wonder if Camping owns any stations there or, at least, have affiliates?
