Family Radio: May 21, 2011 is Judgement Day

nd2023

Banned
There were some people from Family Radio handing out pamphlets in Penn Station this weekend saying that May 21 is Judgement Day and to "tune to Family Radio at 94.7 for the details". That's one way to get a few listeners to the lowest rated FM station in NYC. It's the first time I've ever seen a Family Radio "street team".

If the world doesn't end on May 21, I wish they would sell the station on May 22.

The father of Family Stations, Harold Camping, has been talking for years about May 21, 2011, as the date for the Rapture. In 1992, he wrote a book predicting that September 6, 1994 was to be the date -- but recalculated after that didn't come true. This time, he's actually gotten some coverage from major publications. I guess we'll just have to see what happens.

By the way, this year is the 50th anniversary of Camping's nightly radio show, "Open Forum."

He should just sell 94.7 and get the cash right now, and make the sale effective May 22. After all, if the world is ending, he won't have a use for a radio station. He could use the cash he gets now to spread his Judgement Day rumors. And if the world doesn't end, we get a brand new radio station!

I don't know what's going to happen on 91.7 WFRH in Kingston which is Family Radio. I don't see it happening, but if Judgment Day comes on May 21st like the Arnold Schwarzenegger of "The Terminator" says "I'll Be Back!"

Anyways, I don't followed the Bible, but I don't read it!

Family Radio is also telling the same BS here in LA - I saw a billboard telling about this so-called "Judgement Day" on May 21st, and then promoting the station they're on, which is 1280 AM. I never knew they were even on the air here!

Does anyone even believe this stunt is happening? I certainly don't.

I just realized something. May 21 is also the day of the Brooklyn Half-Marathon, which I'm running in this year. It should be an exciting race!!

I'll give them $50 for the station on 5/22. What good will it be to them since their "mission" will be done? I can't wait to hear the phone calls on 5/22, someone should record them all.

There are at least eight places in the Bible where it very specifically says you cannot predict when the end will come. For the scholars among you, here are the relevant passages:

Matthew 24:36, 24:42, 24:44, 25:13
Mark 13:32, 13:33-37
Acts 1:7
1 Thessalonians 5:1-2

Seems pretty specific to me. It's right there in the book, and no set of arcane calculations is required; The Bible and Occam's Razor are in agreement.

The Bible's really trying to say "live your life as though your judgement might come at any moment." Good advice, really - maybe people'd be nice to each other for a change. (And look what we did to the guy that suggested we do that. Sheesh.)

On the other hand, the "Rapture" is not specifically mentioned, and nothing that even suggests it is mentioned in the Gospels at all. There's a mention in the Gospels that a place is being prepared for the believers, which is consistent with belief in a heaven. Then there's at least one passage in Revelation and another in 1 Thessalonians that suggests that the believers will be brought to heaven first. Even so, these passages leave a lot more open to interpretation - far more interpretation than the rather obvious prohibition on knowing when whatever's going to happen will happen.

It seems to me the desire to have the End Times occur during one's lifetime is a bit egotistical, really. "I will be your guide to most important event in the history of human history..."...puh-leaze.

In short, Harold Camping believes what he wants to believe. He's free to believe he's important. I'm free to think he's Mr. Camping's tent is missing a few pegs. But, hey, whatever.

Yeah, hubcity, what you say makes complete sense, except for the fact that Camping has already declared that all mainstream theological thought is misguided and all churches are evil. If you're disagreeing with him, you're clearly on the wrong side of this battle.

So if I make a check out to them so they can spread the word about end times, and then the world doesn't end on 5/21, they'll refund my money, right?

So the question I was thinking of while coming back from a transmitter site visit in central NJ today was: If Orson Welles got into major trouble by saying the Martians are landing, why doesn't Camping get the same treatment? Is it because he actually believes what he's saying that it isn't a hoax? If it doesn't happen, could it then be declared a hoax? Some people are easily lead and will believe anything, who's to say there isn't a mass Kool-Aid drinking that day or some other weird doings because this guy said the world was going to end on the radio?

Just wondering why he gets a free pass on this but if I went on tomorrow and said that terrorists are going to blow everything up east of the Mississippi on 4/30 I would probably land in jail...

I figured that was a given. You can't win an argument with someone who thinks they're the Ark Of The Covenant. (Nor if they think they're a puppy dog, but that's a different argument.)

There'll be no refunds on donations, of course - they'll need them to buy the computer with which they'll figure out the *next* date of the End Times.

If someone ever buys 94.7, they should definitely stunt with heavy metal no matter what the eventual format.
