Family Radio Names New President

For Family Radio to survive they need to go outside the organization and hire someone that has a humble heart for the Lord and is not part of the current management team that agreed with the many statements made by Camping that offended millions. Statements like, "the church age is over" are just bizarre.

Would it be a bit less bizarre to say: "The age of church as we know it is over"?

The whole per-millenialst movement is based on Mr. Scofield's edition of the Bible which calls for a time of Rapture and I see bumper stickers all over the place saying "cute-sy" little things like "In case of the rapture, this vehicle will become driver-less."

No, the Camping School of theological thinking is not my cup of tea, but I don't know that I find him and the staff of his broadcast group any more bizarre than a number of churches in every community where I have lived.

Actually that idea came from Rome, Margaret McDonald, Edward Irving and John Nelson Darby from some studying I've been doing on this subject.

Mr. Scofield and Camping helped to make this unbiblical doctrine very popular, with their study Bible and on air commentary.

To make a long story short, I agree with your thoughts, Mr. Goat Radio Cowboy and Josh.

I too am offended by those who promote this unbiblical heresy.

Thank God, I no longer support that system of prophecy.

"Left It Behind" back in 2003, after I discovered the truth about it.

Thanks to people like my own Pastor and Dr. R.C. Spoul, I now subscribe to the more Biblical Post-Millenial view.

P.S. More details about this heresy and it's origins can be found in this neat little sermon, I've recently turned into a Bible Tract: http://www.ensignmessage.com/secretrapture.html

Yawn. Family Radio is hopelessly outdated and irrelevant. Almost nobody listens, and they rely on the few that do to keep sending in checks or they would be off the air. As for their end time views, if they really believed them, they would be selling off assets like radio stations and establishing survival bunkers in Montana or something. They sure accept donations like they are preparing to be on the air forever.

The church age as we have known it may well be over. But for different reasons than the narrow end time views of "family" radio. Most churches have failed to keep up with the times. They are paying the price in declining membership. So has Christian radio for the most part.

In most areas of life, there is continuing debate over what are "the best practices".

In the "world of church" I think there has been a struggle all my life between those who abhor change in the church vs those who say 'the church must change'. We probably can't do much with that topic here in a forum about broadcasting. But MAYBE we could share some observations about Christian Radio.

Is it strictly an entertainment vehicle? Is it part of the big picture as a 'para church' auxilary? What would Christian radio be doing or be sounding like... if it were to 'keep up with the times'?

Christian radio has always been a curious mixture of entertainment and an adjunct to the church. Since preaching, hymns, and praise and worship style CCM are on the air, the church members are served. I think future build outs have to be aimed at non-Christians, attracting them to the faith. If it takes techniques and formats proven to work in the secular market, so be it. I have no conflict at all with church being fun - the most fun you have during the week. And I have no conflict at all with radio being fun to listen to and entertaining. Christian stations should be the number one rated stations, because they offer the most fun and entertainment, while fulfilling the Great Commission. Too bad a lot a stations get caught up in taking money from local preachers of dubious qualifications and quality just to have a steady revenue. Christian radio can be fun to listen to, entertaining, and get great ratings. I've done it. The problem is that too many conservative old fogies own the stations, and they are scared of anything new and creative. So they suppress it - "you are having too much fun, time to put on your sackcloth and ashes, get purified and take your spiritual medicine". Then Reverend Bigbottom gets on there and preaches about hellfire and damnation, the dangers of Christian rock and roll, and how the 1611 version of the King James Bible is the only correct one. You know you are in trouble when they pronounce it "bapTIZE". Well - there is a way to attract and keep an audience of non-believers and attract them to the local church! We need to lighten up, get the telephone pole out of our eyes, and quit judging musical styles filtered by our own prejudices! Never, ever, compromise scriptural principles - but you can do that with creative new music done by young artists.

Personally, I think Christian music and Christian radio is about where secular music was in the mid 1950's. Still not mainstream yet, what passes for Contemporary music sounds a lot to me like music of the 40's. People suspicious of the new styles of music, not quite knowing where the new music should fit in - or if it should fit in. Christian music needs a Christian version of Dick Clark, who showed parents in the 50's and 60's that rock and roll was a legitimate genre of music, not to be feared, and the artists were sincerely good musicians and not evil people trying to lead young people astray. We need to show the most conservative church leadership that the new styles of Christian music are not to feared, they are not evil, they are not leading people astray - they are an asset to the church, something that can be used to make Christianity more relevant to youth and young professionals in the 21st century.

I remember a pamphlet published by first Baptist Houston on the occasion of its 150th anniversary. Conservative church members were convinced the new church organ was an instrument of the devil, and broke into the church one night, stole it, and threw it into Buffalo Bayou! Now days, it would be hard to think of a church without an organ. The people that were convinced organs were of the devil are DEAD. The people who were affected by that sin of theft are DEAD. But - the legacy of ignorance lives on right into the 21st century. Just go over to the Dial the "Truth" web site av1611.org and you will find an article actually trying to convince people that DRUMS are of the devil! Somebody ought to tell them what a "toph" is from the Psalms but whatever. We need some quality control over what is published on the web as "truth", because secular bigots in the press have a field day every time one of these nut jobs opens their mouth.

Scratch that last thought I had on here.

I want to now share a true life story with you.

A few months ago, I was telling our former Piano/Organ player about some of the music I listened to. I was telling her about their presentation. As we were speaking, she wasn't too happy with me. When I started telling her about the way these people looked, she then told me D. you need to reject their music. I just looked at her and said nothing. I didn't pay her much attention anyway. From the way she was talking, I could tell right away her upbringing was Independent Baptist. This lady had an issue with CCM, from the way she talked to me. I could tell her musical tastes were very traditional. This lady no longer plays for us. She has since moved on to a new community. I wonder what her response would've been had I shown her a picture of my good friend and big influence Mr. Derek Webb and or Mr. Jeremy Camp. That lady would've freaked out big time. Knowing her, she would've said D. we need to talk to your parents about your musical choices. I need to let them know that your choices are not Biblical and they need to take control over your musical purchases and bar you from supporting these people period. However I would've kept on playing their music out of despite for her. That lady was one strange person indeed. Recently we did a Praise tune called Days of Elijah, during our morning Church service. As we started singing, that lady walked out for a few minutes and didn't return till the song was over. Whatever lady. I may not like Praise music per se but that song is a personal favorite of mine. Like the way Ms. Twila Paris sings it. So you see, the haters for CCM are all over the place. That lady's way of presenting the Gospel would more than likely tick off 95% of my hometown, if she had a radio station in business and was promoting her agenda on it. Sadly to say, she once lived in Columbus Georgia and gave her blessings to Family Radio. She liked their presentation but had some issues with Mr. Camping at the same time.

P.S. Knowing her, that person would've freaked out had I showed her a picture of my all time favorite CD, Jesus Freak by dc Talk.

I've said before that when (or in some cases if) the KJV only anti-CCM types get to Heaven that I hope their neighbor is a long haired NIV toting Christian rock singer. ;D

My sympathies for you having to deal with that type of person. They will also turn right around on you behind your back and gossip about you, so beware!

Real life story of my own - the two year old "music director". My daughter's favorite song at 2 years old was Jesus Freak! She knew the cover art, she saw me cue it up in the CD player, and knew how to operate the CD player (at two, yes!). I had just started a Newsboys song in the left CD player, she hit "stop" 20 seconds into the song, reached over to the right hand CD player, and started up "Jesus Freak"! Of course, all of us from the CD era of radio know - once the CD has been stopped, it is several seconds of seek time to get the track back, which is why auto-cuing CD players were so important. (Track / play / wait / pause - you all know what I am talking about - auto cuing is much easier!!!) After Jesus Freak played - I told my listeners what happened, how my daughter was playing music director.

Another true story about one of these Pharisees. We were waiting for my daughter to get back from a youth retreat. I started talking to other parents, the subject came up of my daughter's acting career, and some of the people we know. She started lamming into Selena Gomez because she was starring on WIZARDS of Waverly Place. I got fed up, and took out my phone, showed her Selena in my contacts, and told her she needed to take that up with Selena, right then, on the phone. I was so mad I told her I would compare Selena's walk with her by any measure - people led to Christ, Bible verses read / memorized, prayer time, etc. She shrank away in fright when I started calling Selena right in front of her. Point is - these people won't face a musical artist, performer, or actor face to face or voice to voice. They prefer to snipe at them behind their back and don't have the fortitude to say it to their face. They rely on the fact their victim won't hear about their slander, if they stumble across somebody who knows them, they can't deal with it. I have NO RESPECT for gossips like that. Neither does the Lord Jesus Christ. Incidentally, our family still stands by and supports Selena, even though we feel Spring Breakers was a mistake. So does she, one she won't repeat.
