Family Radio to Take Over 950 on Friday

It is sad to see 950 WPEN disappear with not even a whisper. I used to enjoy "95PEN" back during the oldies days in the 70's on skywave in Randolph, Massachusetts. It had a great signal at night here in the Boston area, after the local Boston daytimer on 950 kHz (WRYT/WROL) would sign-off for the night. It was probably one of the best live and local oldies stations in the country at the time. I'm sorry to see such a historical station go down the tubes. RIP WPEN.

Probably they forgot about the digital encoding delay of the HD Radio system, which causes the audio coming out of the transmitter to be about 8½ seconds behind what is coming into it from the studio. So the person at the controls probably shut off the transmitter right after they finished speaking, not realizing they needed to wait another few seconds for their complete announcement to go through the delay and actually be broadcast on the air.

Hopefully, Family Radio will turn off the HD Radio on 950 WKDN and turn back on the C-Quam AM Stereo! WPEN transmitted AM Stereo for many years, right up until they switched over to HD (IBOC).

Well, so far the daytime IBOC has remained on. The nighttime IBOC is off; WPEN had shut that off many months ago.

When WNBC 660 New York signed off back in 1988 after 66 years, they had special programming leading up to the final sign off.

And yesterday, WPEN ended 83 years of service as quiet as a mouse. Whoever spoke the final words only said to tune in to 97.5FM, not even thanking listeners for being so kind. Even the final saying of the call letters was cut off when the power was shut off before being turned on again when WKDN signed on.

It think it's a disgrace how that station was ran into the ground in the last few years. GM should have done better. 83 years down the tubes. :mad:

The afternoon team did do a short tribute to WPEN history at about 10 before the hour.

The only people who care about what you call "heritage" are called radio geeks. Most of them are in forums like this. WPEN has been sports for years. "The Station of the Stars" and 95-PEN died many years ago...but at least there are places like this to honor them. So, have at it......
