Favorite Local Television Logos of the Past/Present

The WRAL/Raleigh blue and gold circle 5 logo of the early-to-mid 1980s through late 1994 was very distinctive.

I was also a fan of WWAY/Wilmington's big three in the TV screen logo in the 1980s and 1990s, though it did have a dated look to it.

The WBTW/Florence logo from the late 1980s beats anything they've done since.

WAVY/Portsmouth's blue wave in the 10 logo and WSOC/Charlotte's gold circle 9 are two that have stood the test of time and still look remarkably fresh.

I also liked WCTI/New Bern's blue/red/yellow logo scheme before the current News Channel 12 branding.

I remember at the time Harold Clancy was so sure the Boston Herald Travler would never lose WHDH-TV 5 he made a very stupid fatal mistake of no negotiation
with BBI (WCVB) over studios, transmitter and tower site. There is a great book called "The Million dollar lunch" describing the mess.In the end Herald Travler had an entire Chasnnel 5 station in Boston with no license to operate. Brought down The newspaper which would later be bought by Hearst and merged into the
Record American and Sunday Advertiser which is now the Boston Herald.

And prior to 1990, WSBK-TV Boston was on cable, so the old TV 38 logo ranks as one of my all time faves.

WLVI...The Field 56

Funny, I loved that logo myself. Aside from WLVI, the Fox O&Os (WFXT and WNYW respectively) have a distinct feel to their stations with its FrizQuad look.

There is a great book called "The Million dollar lunch" describing the mess.In the end Herald Travler had an entire Chasnnel 5 station in Boston with no license to operate. Brought down The newspaper which would later be bought by Hearst and merged into the
Record American and Sunday Advertiser which is now the Boston Herald.

Ironically, Hearst is the current owner of WCVB. The Herald, I think, is owned by another company.

My Comcast DVR Cable box STB Tuesday night (don't you just hate that) losing everything, its time they find a way to download and save the info, thery claim
they are working on a solution. I pulled out some old WSBK TV 38 Movie loft tapes from 1985, the TV38 logo was on of the best of all time.
Enjoyed watching ARCO, Jordan Marsh, Filenes, Bay Banks, Fretter Superstores, AMOCO (now back as BP) First National Bank of Boston, Star Market (Mugar), First National Stores (Finast) Lechmere commercials and also others that are no longer in existance or moved out of New England

I miss those original Fox O&O logos and the station IDs that came with them...a real classy feel to them. They would probably work today, if they modernize them a bit.

The Field logos were also good...I know that San Francisco's KBHK (now KBCW) continued to use the Field-era logo for a number of years after the Field stations were sold off (in KBHK's case, to United Television/Chris Craft).

I somewhat recall WLVI using the logo until like November 1991 (I left in June), so when they transformed into that other logo, it felt different.

One of my favorites is the old "Tri-State 7" logo from WTRF Wheeling:

The page says 1995-2002, but there are vids on YouTube dating from 1993 with the logo...

I believe this logo was first used earlier than 1993 -- I had a 1988 TV and Cable Factbook that featured this logo in WTRF's listings.

If you're referring to the one where the "7" is made up of parts of the maps of Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio, I seem to recall that logo appearing soon after the switch from NBC to CBS, or around 1980.
