Unfortunately I think many of us take Steve West for granted. He is absolutely a hardcore pro and remains on the air 28 years after he helped launch 91X. Same with Coe Lewis. In an industry that is often a cesspool filled with piranhas, she remains the sweetest, most decent person in this or any business.
Ernie Gladden was okay but he kind of had this unnatural unctous-ness to his voice. Not pukey, but not exactly natural either. I'm surprised no one mentioned one of Ernesto's underground contemporaries who is still very active in radio: Gabriel Wisdom (although someone did mention the News Brothers of which he was one).
In my mind Richbro and Bobby Ocean were to San Diego DJs as Vin Scully and Chick Hearn were to sportscasters. They were Numbers 1 and 2 and then there was a huge gap and then everyone else came in way behind. Or to put it another way, they were to SD what Robert W Morgan and Real Don Steele were to L.A., even though they had all four had completely different styles (especially Ocean).
