Favorite Radio Personality In The Pittsburgh Market-Past Or Present

Kind of following a post from the Altoona market section.

Pittsburgh radio has seen a ton of talent over many years. Some have moved on to better things, some still in the same boat. Who is your favorite radio personality from the past or present?

I personally always enjoyed Mark St. John-WYDD and Michelle Michaels-WDVE.

Doug Cannin is one of my good friends, so I have to include him, but I like just about everyone on DVE.

Jim Krenn/Randy Baumann
Michelle Michaels

I hate Scott Paulsen left for K-Rock. He's hilarious.

I enjoyed Stan Savran's radio show. Is he on the radio anywhere now?

Bill Hillgrove is also an incredible PBP personality.

When I got into radio in the mid-80's, Jack Maloy was my hero. I loved "For Headphones Only". At my first AOR gig, I caught heck for talking-up intros on commercials ;D

In no particular order....

O'Brien and Garry, Quinn (as a DJ), Brinkman, Don Berns, Don Bombard, Bob Dearborn, Jimmy Roach solo on DVE in the afternoons, Paulsen and Krenn, Jackson Armstrong, Randy Miller, Suitcase Simpson, Sean McDowell, Fred Winston, Myron Cope...

I'm a Bogut guy myself. When I hear what's happened to radio in the last several years, it's just enough to gug ya.

The late Bumper Morgan, Mike McGann, Chunk Brinkman, Jim Harrington and Jay Mitchell, Clarke Ingram, Caleb Michaels ( ;)), Johnny Morgan (we're talking past, right??), and John Rook (does he count as a personality, even if he was PD?)

And I'm going to single out two guys who are absolutely amazing: "THE VOICE" Bob Wilson, and the late Rex Miller (whose planned and scripted free-wheeling style was absolutely the funniest thing I have heard).

I've still got his Channel One album that he put out in the early 60's. Last time I listened to it, it was still funny!

But my vote is for O'Brien & Garry -- day in, day out, consistently entertaining without being crude, without ambushing or belittling the unsuspecting (well, except for Captain Showbiz) and they did it for a couple of decades!

As stated above ;D "Knucklehead and Pondscum" ;D( O'Brein and Gearry) absoultley, hands down the best morning show.Pure entertainment, and well though out sillyness. Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye goodbye. Bits with Myrone Cope, Neil Spence , Dick Mancini were great!
As far as sports talk, Thor Tolo was very good and for talk what about Roy Fox ?

Presnt day best DJ's? Clarke Ingram's & Kaleb Micheals KHB weekend music shows, and Truckin Tom Kent (yep I'm an old Top 40, hit the post, crank the reverb up a notch high energy music guy)Sports talk Ellis Cannon, talk Cris Moore.( I may disagree with him on many issues, but he is intellegent, and well read.)
Syndicated talk in 'da burgh Bill O'Reily

Oh what fun!

Top of my list Don Berns. Then O'Brien and Garry, Jim Quinn, Dearborn, and even Johnny Williams. I know I loved TAE.

Also Jay Stone, Clarke Ingram, Bob Savage, Keith Abrams, Calib James, "The Birdman" at WHBQ, Scott Shannon at Q 104, Tampa, Jim Cook at JET in Erie.

And yes, that was the Bumper Morgan I was talking about.

Glenn Morgan, as he was known, at WNBC (amongst others).

In no particular order:

Mike Lange, Bob Prince, Myon Cope, Jack Armstrong, Jack Bogut, O'Brien & Garry, Chuck Brinkman, Jimmy & Steve, Paulsen & Krenn, Herschel, Sean McDowell, Fred Winston, Clark Race, Bob Tracey and Bob Dearborn.

How many hours of great radio does that add up to? Listening to people like that its no wonder the people who post on this board got addicted to the biz.

How many hours of great radio does that add up to?

For the DJ's, assuming :15 seconds of "great" talking per stop average (excluding time hacks, temperature checks, etc., which aren't really "great"), with an average of 10 stops per hour, that's 150 seconds per hour program, or 2 1/2 minutes. On a four hour show, that's 10 minutes of "great radio", or almost an hour per week. Assuming two weeks of vacation, that's 50 weeks or 41 2/3 hours of "great radio" per DJ per year. That works out to around 1 3/4 days of "great radio" per DJ per year.

For the sports casters, it's more difficult to calculate.

It would have to be....The one and only, the great, the awesome: Trish "The Dish" Beatty! ;D

Close seconds: Joe Denardo, Bob Kudzma, Art "Your Pal" Pallen, John Cigna,

also my personal friend Keith Abrams (we called him "Beef" in college, Clarion University!)

Wait, I did miss one, how could one forget... Myron Cope on Sports?

Stuart :)

How could I forget Lange ("Look Out Loretta") and the Gunner.... and Hersch on DVE.... gotta add Ellis Cannon as a present day favorite as well....

In keeping with everyone else's answers, I guess my favorite radio personalities in the Pittsburgh Market-past or present would be anyone and everyone whose name I could remember.

That includes Lyle Lorenz and Mavis Logan.

I have 3, Jimmy Roach, Hersch, When they were at DVE! And the Guy I owe my radio career to Sean McDowell. He took me under his wing almost 20 years, showing me more than any college radio instructor could show me, Also I've got to include Steve Rohan for alot as well, he educated me on doing appearence's, between the two of them I wouldn't be in this business today. Big Thank's guy's for being great teachers and friends as well.

I think you miss the point somewhat.... in my case, at least, I was trying to convey the idea that there have been a few really superior talents in the market over my lifetime. If you pull that list of 10-15 names from all the people who have been on the air in the market over the past 35-40 years, that's really a pretty short list.
