Wow! I've been going through this thread, always looking for new songs to play on my show on a Saturday night (Flashback Saturday Night on Y102 in Reading, PA). Lots of the songs listed, I already play, but got some good ones to add to the mix from this thread!

How about these 3:

"Bears" - Zebra
"Burning Heart" - Vandenberg
"Call To The Heart" - Giuffria

They were played non-stop in the 80s, but have fallen off the face of the earth, except as far as I know, on my show on a Saturday night. We need to bring back more of the stuff like that!! What I notice is since we've stopped playing songs like Stairway to Heaven in regular rotation, I get more requests for it on a Saturday night. Interesting sometimes.....

"Pinball Wizard" Elton John's 1975 version from the film "Tommy: The Rock Opera" (much better than the original The Who version--played more 'out of respect' than EJ's).

"Take The Money And Run" used to LOVE hearing this one on New Orlean's WTIX-AM back in the day.

"Still The One" Orleans--good song from '76.

" I Just Wanna Stop" Gino Vanelli (this one used to get the babes back in the 70s).

"She's Gone" Hall & Oates No longer gets much airplay in Louisiana (given we have Bayou now: WRNO is dead).

The Outlaws, "Green Grass And High Tides".

stonecold is played all thge time on buzzsaw and boneyard
knocking at your back door is played on buzzsaw , boneyard, big tracks and laffeyette la on rock 93.7
outlaws are played on top tracks on xm.

wheres the list of songs that are never played ;D

There's just some really long songs that you don't hear anymore like "Do What You Like"-Blind faith, "Innagadavita"-Iron butterfly-Doors stuff like "The End" and "The Soft Parade", early Blood Sweat and Tears stuff (w/ Al Kooper). I could name 50 more ..
My rant is that stations choose 2 overplayed blah songs instead of 1 really long classic song.

Five Man Electrical Band - Signs

Temptations - Get Ready, (rather than Rare Earth)

Robert Knight - Everlasting Love (rather than Carl Carlton)

The first two are played fairly frequently on Boston's WODS "Oldies 103.3". They also may pull out the Knight "Everlasting Love" once in a while, though they usually play the Carlton.

I just heard "Lucky Man" by EL&P this afternoon for the first time on FM in many years. It was a very popular frequently played song in it's time but it must not have suited the "suits" that control things. Too bad. Based on the number of posts and number of songs theres a lot of good stuff that just ain't hitting the air.

I didn't see any BOSTON songs mentioned yet. Stuff like Cool The Engines, Hollyann, or Can'tcha Say/Still In Love from Third Stage, I Need Your Love or the Walk On medly from Walk On, Higher Power from the Greatest Hits, or I Had A Good Time, You Gave Up On Love, and the live Living For You from Corporate America. I don't get just playing the crap out of the standards from two albums when there is so much more to play...

I only list some BOSTON examples, but the same goes for so many artists.

It's because there's less being played.
Every year the playlists get squeezed, and many excellent songs get bummed so they can play 'More Than a Feeling' more.

Alice Cooper- Cold Ethel
Queen- Play The Game
Kansas- Play the Game Tonite
Pretty Maids- Future World
Tesla- Modern Day Cowboy
Giuffria- I Must Be Dreaming
Ozzy- Lightning Strikes Again
Black Sabbath(with Ronnie James Dio) Mob Rules

a couple of thoughts.....

for every song that you do not hear in your city a station in the city another poster lives will probally play it.it does you no good if your stations don`t play it.

before bob and tom were syndicated and were just local dj`s on wfbq here, they did a cash song in the morning and afternoon.who called first or fifth or what ever picked the next cash song.one winner on the morning bob and tom show started picking ted nugent songs.problem was none were the two or three ted nugent songs on wfbqs super limited playlist.tom grizwald finally said "we will pick the cash song".

my question is just for that occasion ,couldn`t a station break the playlist rule once?

also xm radio may play every good song under the sun but there are some among us that don`t want to pay extra for radio .there are some who just want better music selection on fm like in the day.

The "Advertisers" are comfortable with this "playing the crap our of the standards"...

It's kind of a filter for the advertisers.... they intend to market their products to humaniods that would actually settle for just having the the crap played out of the same songs, over and over again..... Yeo, that is....their target audience!! And it's radio's job to bring that audience, and their level of sophistication to the advertisers.

Hence, the copporate conglomerate goal for radio, is to please the advertisers, who seek the lowest common denominator. If you somehow rise above the "masses", then there is no radio for you. See what a nice society you live in ??

And thats the reason that God created Sattelite radio, Internet radio, mp3 players , CD players and even records so you want have to hear more than a feeling for the 7,000,000,000,000,000th time since 1976 ;D
Dont like FM than quit listning. I did 5 years ago. If everyone did than there would be no advertisers because no one would be listning. ;)

I know about the other ways to listen to music.....

But I happen to really the medium of FM Radio to hear great Music.

The only problem is, I don't define something as great, if it's overplayed, just like an AM Top 40 station would do.

All of the these other mediums, do not give that live, local feel for communally enjoying the same great music together.

For me, that great music is Rock music. But not Boston, not Def Leppard, not the AC/DC songs they play, etc. Let the trailer park crowd have their innane rock. AND, let the Rock sophisticates have their outlet. To shove us off to Satellite will not do.

Power to the people. I am one of the "people".
