Favorite Songs You Never Hear On Radio Anymore

"Fire" by the Crazy World of Arthur Brown was a huge hit in 1968. "Na Na Hey Hey" by Steam in 1969. Both one hit wonders. One song (guess) you near hear (guess) one you do ad nauseum. That's why I'm looking at satelite radio for the first time very closely. Too many assumptions made about too many folks' musical tastes. If radio doesn't mix it up and start getting creative, it will die a death (and never return) like the dinosaurs.

For some reason I like the Bananarama version of "Fire" also.

Ok, I just stumbled across this site and think it's great! Glad to hear that people actually still give a crap about classic rock. I would love to put some input on some tunes as well. I am a PD for a Classic Rock station in Northern Indiana and we play quite a few of the deeper Skynyrd cuts and the Triumph tunes. We also dig into some lost classics like:

Runner - Manfred Mann's Earth Band
Run Run Away - Slade
Why Me? - Planet P Project(Great trip back to the early days of MTV)
Voices - Russ Ballard
New York Groove - Ace Frehley
He Can't Love You - Michael Stanley Band
One Hit To The Body - Rolling Stones
Backwater - Meat Puppets
Darlington County - Bruce Springsteen
I would also suggest anything from UFO or April Wine. A couple of great Canadian rock bands that have some great jams!

Most of this stuff hit the top 40. Listeners really love to hear it once in awhile. Helps freshen things up and a great trip back for em.

My favorite Manfred Mann song is "Blinded by the light". His version is better than Bruce Springsteen's

"Ballad of Mott the Hoople" by Mott the Hoople. The only Mott song you're likely to hear on Classic Rock stations is, of course, "All the Young Dudes", a song that wasn't even written by the band! They deserve better treatment by Classic Rock radio!!

Genesis with Peter Gabriel- Lamb Lies Down On Broadway.
- Carpet Crawers
-Ripples
Genesis after Peter Gabriel-Deep In The Motherlode.
-Misunderstanding
-Follow you,Follow me
Peter Gabriel-Games without Frontiers.

Peter Gabriel-Solsbury Hill

Q-104.3 in New York City constantly plays that song, though it doesn't bother me too much since it's such a great song.

An interesting discussion.Granted todays mainstream radio exec's just cram the same songs over and over down the listeners throats, always looking at the bottom line.Somebody one day will get it.Hopefully it is not too late.

Glad to see one song I was looking for to get mentioned..Sara Lee by Foghat.I just wish those running classic rock station would really expand their music vault or let the DJs themselves play some song normally not heard.

Here in Sacramento our Classic Rock Eagle has been playing basically everything for A-Z.Been interesting.

In Your Wildest Dreams - The Moody Blues
I Know You're Out There Somewhere - The Moody Blues

"Wild Dogs" by Tommy Bolin
"So Long" by Fischer Zed
"All The Young Heroes" by Gary O
"Nicole" by Point Blank
"Battle Scar" by Max Webster
"I'm An Adult Now" The Pursuit Of Happiness
"Wink Of An Eye" Heaven
"Jammin' Me" Tom Petty...with all the CRAP tracks that get played (see his post Wilbury career)
"Say Goodbye" Triumph
"Say What You Will" Fastway
"Stone The Crow" Down
"Losin' Your Mind" Pride & Glory
"Lightning Strikes" Aerosmith

We could go on all night.

I am fascinated by the hard rock of the late 70s/early 80s. You will rarely hear it on the radio except for the biggest bands like Van Halen and AC/DC. It doesn't fit classic rock and is too old (and less glam/cartoonish) to be considered part of the hair metal era. It just fell though the cracks. Here's a few I liked, some might have been mentioned before.

UFO-Too Hot To Handle
Rainbow-Since You've Been Gone
Motorhead-Ace Of Spades
Pat Travers-Snortin' Whiskey
Pat Travers-Boom Boom (out go the lights)
Ted Nugent-Wango Tango
Saxon-Denim and Leather

April Wine's "I Like to Rock" was especially clever, with the opening riff from "Day Tripper" in one channel, simultaneous with "Satisfaction" in the other, in the fadeout. This used to be an airplay staple of the "old" Rock 103 in Memphis, but they probably wouldn't touch it now.

Add Riot's "Swords & Tequila"
Axe - "Rock n Roll Party In The Streets"
Saga - "On The Loose"
Helix "The Kids Are All Shakin'"

....this could get fun

You guys bring up a good point concerning some of the hard rock bands and even some of the hair bands (at least you now have some novelty shows like Dee Snider's House of Hair etc). Rainbow, UFO, etc don't get hardly any radio play at all and I don't know if I have ever heard a station play Saxon unless it was on a novelty show.

Let me throw in Zebra-Who's Behind the Door

Here is what I don't get. It's a good song but I hear Autograph's "Turn Up the Radio" all the time on classic rock radio. That was their only hit and unless you are a fan of 80's hard rock like some of us are, the average rock fan (Even a lot of classic rock fans) could not even tell you who Autograph were or what album that song came off of (Sign In Please). How does that one sneak in a regular playlist but using Paul's choice not Axe "Rock N Roll Party in the Streets."

While we are at it, outside of a few songs, the Nuge doesn't get a lot of play on classic rock radio, and I have always been surprised rock legend Alice Cooper doesn't either outside of stuff like School's Out or Eighteen. Alice is still around, putting out some pretty good albums, and people forget how big he was at one point. He has 14 Top 40 hits. Why do you never hear something like "Under My Wheels" or "I Never Cry"

I just want to thank whoever mentioned Russ Ballard-Voices. I forgot about it until I saw it listed here. Great song!
