FCC auction of channel 3 in Apalachicola, FL

The FCC has just wrapped up an auction of 10 new full power television stations. My interest lies in the lone VHF channel in this auction, channel 3 licensed to Apalachicola, FL. It was won by a company called "Word of God Fellowship, Inc." After researching them on Google, it appears that they opperate Daystar network affiliates. The sales price for this station was over $1.3 million. I can't imagine that a station targeting Apalachicola would be worth anywhere near that much money. Also, this station seems awful close to WEAR channel 3 in Pensacola, less than 150 miles away. I assume their proximity to Pensacola will prevent Apalachicola's new channel 3 from placing their transmitter close to Panama City and that they will be targeting the Tallahassee market instead.

Do any of the insiders on this board have any insight on this future station? Any opinions on the $1.3 million purchase price for the license? Any ideas on what the coverage area may be?

This channel is digital-only, and since WEAR-DT will be staying on channel 17, and the interference rules for digitals is different, there will be no issue.

That said, I don't know why Daystar wanted to spend so much to target such small markets.

Two words -- "must carry". Being a full-powered station, they can demand that cable companies in their coverage area carry the station. Daystar and TBN are buying stations to increase their potential audience throught "must carry".

Probably, too, is the fact that there are a lot
of fundamentalist Christians in northwest Florida.
 
With "must carry" can they demand coverage by cable systems in their coverage area or just their DMA? If they broadcast full power from Apalachicola that should barely get their signal to Panama City and Tallahassee. Apalachicola is on the far eastern fringe of the Panama City DMA, probably closer to and better able to target Tallahassee.

Usually just their DMA, but if their signal significantly covers a neighboring market, they could qualify for "must carry" in at least the part of the market they cover. For example: I-affiliate WZPX in Battle Creek, MI (part of the Grand Rapids market) has must-carry in the Lansing market, as their signal covers most of that market. And Toledo's WLMB has must-carry in Monroe County, MI -- part of the Detroit market.

Neither. It will be an SD digital station. Unless Daystar starts HD really soon (really unlikely).
