FCC chair threatens ABC O&O's over Jimmy Kimmel’s remarks

Note this move by the FCC Chairman affects ABC owned stations like KABC-TV especially given that Jimmy Kimmel's show is filmed in LA and Disney's main office is in Burbank.

Absolute bullshit!

First off, the FCC is forbidden from persecuting any media entity due to differences in personal political opinion.

Second, Kimmel was absolutely right.

Third, Brendan Carr should sit on a bag of ice to soothe that butthurt.

Sorry for the rant and the salty language, but all this cancel culture turnaround nonsense is really pissing me off.

However, they can take action on false content transmitted on affiliated broadcast stations. The comment refers to Kimmel's false assertions about the motivation and political affiliations / leanings of the accused assassin of Kirk.
Second, Kimmel was absolutely right.
Kimmel was not right; the accused assasin was not in any way a MAGA / Right wing / Republican symopathizer and evidence to the contrary, right down to the inscriptions on the bullet casings, showed that well before Kimmel's inaccurate remarks.

You obviously haven't been reading the news or social media the past week. What Kimmel said might piss off some people, but he wasn't wrong.

He stated that the accused assassin was MAGA / Republican. That was already proven incorrect. But it made for some good punch lines in his monologue.

Doesn't make him a liberal. Or a Democrat if he did hold some left leaning views. There are plenty of pro-gun, pro-LGBT "libertarians" who are immersed in gamer culture. The idea that simply because someone holds some views someone labels as left wing makes them not in any way "right wing" is an immense simplification of people's politics - perfect for talk radio, but intellectually dishonest.

I don't know a lot of "liberals" that would consider calling someone gay (one of the inscriptions) an insult or an "own." That's straight out of Discord/4chan troll and meme culture. I'm not saying this guy was MAGA, or Republican. Or Democrat. I'm saying he was a messed up person with the chaotic and shallow ideologies of an imaginary online world.

We don't know this man's heart or mind, just his (awful) action. We may never know. And half the country won't trust the "answer" anyways. Kimmel can say what he wants or feels just like Limbaugh, Bongino, Savage, and a litany of others did, regardless of substance or accuracy. Or at least he could, until the same people that said white nationalists shouldn't be banned from Twitter now think people should be de-platformed for quoting Charlie Kirk, or casting aspersions on his legacy.

It doesn’t matter. He is not a journalist. He is not employed by the news division. He did not defame any individual or legal entity like a company. If we’re going to hold him to that standard, Fox News should go dark.

An Update we now have a confirmation that KABC-TV is targeted directly by the FCC over the Jimmy Kimmel situation.

A law firm with conservative ties has filed a formal complaint to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) against a Los Angeles television station that is directly tied to the Walt Disney Company and ABC’s decision to suspend its late night talk show “Jimmy Kimmel Live.”

On Thursday, the Center for American Rights (CAR) filed the complaint against KABC-TV (Channel 7), alleging talk show host Jimmy Kimmel acted with “callous disregard of the facts” in his opening monologue on Monday, during which he wrongfully implied that a man suspected of shooting political activist Charlie Kirk was politically aligned with supporters of President Donald Trump.

Hey Y2K, the words you use matter.

What we know so far is that KABC-TV is the subject of a complaint made to the FCC. How the FCC deals with the complaint is not yet known. But no, the FCC is not targeting KABC-TV directly, at least not yet. If anyone is targeting KABC-TV directly it's this "Center for American Rights."

Pro tip: If you're going to act like a cub reporter on so many broadcasting-related issues, please, at least stick to facts in your summaries.

The FCC is planning to order ABC O&Os to file license renewals early, due to the latest complaint about Kimmel:

I'm not aware of there being any precedent for this. Their licenses don't come up for renewal until 2028.

They want to use the "public interest" standard as a means for revoking their licenses.

Precedent for what? In the past, I believe, early renewal has been used as an alternative to full revocation.

Whatever you say, and whatever the FCC does, the “expectant widow” comment is about the worst I have heard in six decades of working in broadcasting.

Use of the FCC and the full power of the government to retaliate over a joke, and send a warning to every other entity not to offend the regime, is far worse than any joke. It’s almost like there’s a word for that kind of action.

Although perhaps having moved on from the feigned outrage over the “he was one of theirs” is progress, of a sort.

And perhaps the government under the thumb of someone who celebrates a citizen’s death should be less concerned about a late-night joke.

That was not a joke. Wishing for the death of a person, even in a joke, is never funny. Thinking that it is is sick. Even smaller broadcast operations have someone in charge of “Standards and Practices” and their job is to prevent this kind of sickness.

Regardless, the first amendment protects all speech including the disgusting speech. Kimmel explained that it had to do with the huge age difference. Not an uncommon thought. Some have used phrases such as "sugar daddies" or "trophy wife" to describe that kind of relationship.

This kind of government targeting is what caused Howard Stern to leave broadcast radio for satellite. Conservative talk radio uses the same type of speech talking about LGBT people or even democrats. Perhaps it's time for them to get sued too.

Nobody was "wishing for the death of a person." You're inventing things, in the way others invented racism in Jason Aldean's song Try That In a Small Town. Some thought the song was promoting lynching of black people. It was all made up. Same with this. The shooting happened AFTER the comment. Nobody complained about the comment until 5 days later.
