FCC grants Construction Permit to Kids First. WITT 91.9 Zionsville !!!

On May 30, 2007 the FCC granted a CP for 91.9 licensed to Zionsville and held
by Kids First Inc., of Indianapolis. W I T T are the new calls. The board of
KFI is all local individuals. The group hopes to have the station on the air within
15 to 18 months. Programming will include some music and stories for children,
local artists, hourly news bulletins from both Radio Nederlands and Pacifica.
Community awareness modules will run throughout the day promoting local issues
and upcoming events in the Zionsville, Lebanon, Brownsburg, Indy area. These
modules will be aired under the title "HOME" and run for three minutes per hour.
Throughout the day and overnight the mix of music will be very wide indeed.

and presented by many able volunteers.
Local news will be aired on the half hour. WITT is a non-commercial radio station.

Hourly news bulletins from both Radio Nederlands and Pacifica? These "sources" are so far to the left they make Ted Kennedy look like an ultra right winger.

I believe this is going to be what's called COMMUNITY RADIO. Most cities Indy's size
had one 25 years ago. This is something Indianapolis has never heard.

Bloomington, Columbus, Marengo, and Attica are towns in Indiana that have had
a taste of this untill now.

Good luck to 91.9 the new sound comming to Indy!

Congrats to the 91.9 crew.

Are there more CPs being given out for Low Power non-commercial stations?

And what would the value of that CP be, if it were immediately put on the market. I understand that wouldn't be their purpose, but would be curious the perceived value of the CP.

The sale value would be the dollars spent so far in getting the license, with an additional restriction that these new CPs cannot be sold to anyone with less points than the licensee. The FCC apparently wants these stations built by the licensees, not traded for profit.

Any other value would be a matter of opinion ... serving one's community is hard to place a "value" on.

I did not grow up in Indianapolis but I'm sure there are many who have read your post who strongly disagree with your position. From what I've heard about Indy's radio history, it sounds like the following radio stations had outstanding records of serving the Indianapolis community: WFBM, WATI, WIRE, WIFE, WIBC, WTUX.

I think what you're talking about is merely ultra-leftist programming. Stuff so far to the left that even National Peoples Radio, I mean, National Public Radio won't even carry it.

Voices? or Broadcasters?

Who is the group launching this station?

Th.is should be a good thing. By the way, I've been to Holland many times and did not know that
the Dutch are a bunch of commies. I'm sure Frenchman was KIDDING.
Indy is in for a real treat! Congratulations WITT!

Dutchman, that's not what I meant in my reference to Radio Nederlands. The Dutch themselves are great people. I lived in Belgium for 2 years, the French-speaking part of course. The Flemish/Dutch people in Belgium and the Dutch were fantastic. My problem with the Dutch radio-TV presentation of the news is that it generally reflects their culture which is far, far to the left socially & culturally. So it's not a political concern, it's a concern about the way news and issues are going to be presented to children based on the absense of values of the people who are presenting it. And here's a question, we're talking about Community Radio in Zionsville and they want to get news updates from Radio Nederlands? Doesn't that puzzle anyone? Or news updates from Pacifica...an organization that advocated using arson to get people to listen to their points of view? That's a great source for kids to listen to, right?

Just keep repeating "It takes a village ..."

I seriously don't mean to be rude but do you guys honestly think that a format like this is designed with kids in mind? The average 8 year old doesn't need to hear news from Pacifica (or any other source for that matter). I do agree with the stories for kids and playing music now found on the commercial stations so that they can be exposed to something different. However, the political stuff... I don't agree with that being on a station that's targeting young children. I long for the days when I was a young child when I didn't know how the real world is... with the news and other other "issues" programming it's almost like they'd be more likely to be corrupted. That said, i could understand that stuff being on the air at night when kids are less likely to be listening but not during the day. Just my $0.02 worth.

This was on RadioCity's earlier post:

"In the music mixes, 91.9fm will sound more similar to Bruce Quinn's wonderfully eclectic Columbus station than say one of the high school NCE's here in town."

(found in this thread - http://www.radio-info.com/smf/index.php/topic,67228.msg481359.html#msg481359 )

Given this, and the leftist/facist news that will run - sounds more like this station is for the ADULTS in Zionsville, with the children as an afterthought (or way to get the license for their own radio playground.)

How about music geared towards KIDS, news geared towards and reported by KIDS?

KIDS FIRST? Or Kids SECOND?

Who in the world said kids are going to turn off the TV and video games and turn on this radio station, anyway? You can include any words in your corporate name, it doesn't mean that "Kids First" is going to be a format for 8-year-olds. Sounds like some folks wanted an outlet for left wing programming, and that's what they got.

They probably don't even know they are running left-wing propaganda. Sounds more like trying to put together an "artzy fartzy" type of eclectic station to "broaden the kids' horizons," when in reality, the only ones listening will be the organizers and friends (wine and cheese crowd).

but more power to them. I don't fault them for getting it and putting on the air, but based on info that's been provided, versus the name of the organization, I'd say they are COMPLETELY in the dark as far as programming (maybe learned under Quinn???), or used the Kids First just to obtain a license.

Can't WAIT for their Global Warming Radio-thon fund-raiser!

Pacifica man pleads not guilty to arson, vandalism
The damage, covering 80-100 feet, splashed hate messages against minorities
, FROM STAFF REPORTS
Article Last Updated: 06/02/2007 02:42:19 AM PDT

A Pacifica man accused of contributing to a midnight attack of arson and hate-filled graffiti at Oceana High School in April was arraigned Friday in San Mateo County Superior Court.
Robert Polk Jr., 20, pleaded not guilty to felony arson, burglary and vandalism charges associated with the attack.
[EDIT]

Is this the Pacifica referred to using arson? If so, this Pacifica is a town in California
I believe and has nothing to do with the radio network.

This is Pacifica Radio - http://www.pacifica.org/

"Pacifica Radio is a listener supported community radio network of commercial free stations that server their local communities and beyond. Pacifica is KPFA in Berkeley, CA; KPFK in Los Angeles, CA; KPFT in Houston, TX; WBAI in New York, NY; WPFW in Washington DC; and over 100 affiliate stations."

Is this the one that you are affiliating with? It would be interesting to know more about "Kids First" ... at the moment all I have been able to find out about the station relates to the president, James Walsh and his courtroom video company. Is there an existing outreach to children that this is expanding?

In response to Justalurker.....

Pacifica and Radio Nederlands are some of the options open to WITT. The other
networks for noncommercials such as NPR, PRI and BBC are already being used
by other noncoms in the Indy market. Thus only a few services are still available. Nothing is written in stone yet.

As for childrens programming, that would be devoid of newscasts for the most part and
those, if any, might pertain to school or childrens information. Kids First is not in the
business of indoctrinating any young minds with any kind of political views, etc.
In fact, noncoms are strictly forbidden by the FCC to do that within any age group.

That said, the FCC does not ban healthy discussions and debates. Political or otherwise.
Childrens music and stories will occupy those hours when the young ones are off to
school, coming home, or may have a little time on the weekends to hear a good story
or two.
The rest of the broadcast day will be devoted to a potpourri of music, comedy, and
modules of information and interest, and local area news.

Jim Walsh is indeed a video court reporter who formed Kids First along with another
devoted childrens radio programmer and author. It has taken about 15 years for
Kids First to realize this Construction Permit. There are some very dedicated supporters
of the project....who, by the way, are still alive ! ! ! LOL.
Mr. Walsh has extensive experience in many broadcast facilities. A partial list includes
WAIV, WSMJ, WXLW, WISH, WEBN, WLYK, WFMS, WICR, WAJC, WKLU, WATI, WBAT,
and in Canada CJOH, CKOY, CKBY, the CBC. His background includes production,
on-air talent, programming, management, and music librarian.

There is no intent to make WITT some sort of voice for one political point of view over
another. The mission of WITT is to use radio in all its art forms....sound imaging,
communicating, enlightening, informing, entertaining, and perhaps a bit of
mystifying....to give the listener a chance to take a journey through the world of
sound only radio can provide.

Noncommercial radio should have no boundaries. Research why the FCC formed
the noncom band and discover that it is there for experimenting, enlightening,
and doing all those things commercial radio cannot afford to do.

WITT will not necessarily be an alternative. It WILL be another voice in the
Zionsville/Indy communities.
