FEEL SORRY FOR NY, LOVE YA....BUT YOUR RADIO DIAL LEAVES A LOT TO BE DESIRED!

Was just in Gotham and tried to listen...I'm shocked at how bland and boring the radio dial is!

Radio in L.A, S.F., San Diego and even Sacramento have NY by it's big Apples!

Goin back to Cali, "strictly for the weather"...and better radio!

Say what you will, but New Yorks classic hits WCBS blows KFRC out of the water..

New York is alot better than Boston( radio dial).

I agree. New York radio is bad.

Hot 97 is only slightly better than Jamn 94.5 in Boston. There are many southern Hip-Hop stations that would blow Hot 97 outta the water.

Hot 97-13 Payola songs

Power 105.1-Cookie Cutter CC Power station

98.7 Kiss FM-Oldies leaning Adult R&B Station. Same old 80s songs over and over again. If new, too heavy on OFF-KEYshia Cole and Beyonce. Very bland.

what ya talkin about? ny better is way better then sf radio, I would take ktu over movin anyday and hot 97 and power over wild and kmel

sfradio-

You've got one of the most (if not the most) varied and eclectic radio dials in the country. All the stations sound good up there....Bay
Area listeners are lucky!

Re: FEEL SORRY FOR NY, LOVE YA....BUT YOUR RADIO DIAL LEAVES A LOT TO BE DESIRED

I seem to be the only one who enjoys Boston radio. I actually look forward to hearing their stations when I travel there. But then again I'm a fan of alternative rock and stations with eclectic playlists, and I'm probably in the minority there.

As for NYC, the only station I really love is WCBS-FM. WRXP pleasantly surprises me sometimes, and WABC has their great Saturday Night Oldies show, but other than that, NYC radio is pretty blah. Thankfully there are also some enjoyable NJ stations that I can listen to.

I assume your remark means you think NY radio is superior to the cities I mentioned?

Agreed, as far as rock, goes NY Sucks! Especially K-Rock. The only stations that I enjoy are Z, PLJ and Pulse. Hot is still ok, but as of lately has gotten to repetative.

Re: FEEL SORRY FOR NY, LOVE YA....BUT YOUR RADIO DIAL LEAVES A LOT TO BE DESIRED

Stream whatever station you want on the internet...nowadays, all stations are game and you aren't limited by location!!
gotta love the net!!
woo hoo.

Re: FEEL SORRY FOR NY, LOVE YA....BUT YOUR RADIO DIAL LEAVES A LOT TO BE DESIRED

Want a good market? Phoenix...Salt Lake City...San Diego...Cincinnati...they still have a great mix of stations which feature oldies, R&B, Jazz, eclectic formats and a little pizazz. TORONTO is probably the hot market now, and as one radio professional AM740 is one incredible class act.

There is hope for the big apple...LONG ISLAND. The radio is better on the island than in the city. Funny how the home grown stuff can put to shame what goes down in Midtown. Two clear favorites of mine are WLNG (the best darn oldies station bar none - REAL oldies radio) and for the 80s/90s/alternatives hands down it's 96.9-EHM. About the only listenable stuff around the boroughs these days is the Christian/Gospel stuff with some great announcers and good music.

Much as I love NY - it is a breath of fresh air to hit the other markets above where radio is not truncated by lots of the same thing.

Hope PPM will help to get rid of one of New York's Urbans. They are all bad. Looks like CC's cookie cutter Urban "Power" would be the one to flip.

for the most part I hate to say it but I must agree with you BUT
I must ask, did you cruise down the lower left end of the dial? like maybe OH i don't know Pulse 87.7 ?

Re: FEEL SORRY FOR NY, LOVE YA....BUT YOUR RADIO DIAL LEAVES A LOT TO BE DESIRED

WCBS-FM plays the same 500-1000 1968-1980 songs. KRTH plays the same 500-1000
1968-1980 songs. All classic hits stations play the same 500-1000 1968-1980 songs.
Other than a few minor market by market musical nuances, all classic hits stations in all markets are the same. This means mediocrity in New York, mediocrity in L. A. and mediocrity everywhere else.

I wonder though if these complaints are not more the result of contrasting commercial mass media with the huge personal choice we now have.

I'am old enough (51) to remember when NYC had WNBC,WABC,WWDJ, WOR-fm, WPIX-fm all going with the same playlist of 14-22 songs. There were many more formats available then, but if you were into Top-40 and current hits, that is what you had.

In the spring of 1964 I discovered WWRL (R&B) while tuning to WQXR for my Mother...a major relief from all Beatles all the time!

PSA_Man-

I did and Pulse seemed to have some of that NY energy you'd expect...But Pulses signal?? That and CBS-FM were the only 2 stations I found myself listening to!

And how there's a market that size without Smooth Jazz (or a hybrid of it) is beyond me? Go figure radio?

airpab I assume your remark means you think NY radio is superior to the cities I mentioned?

Actually, referring to the success WCBS-FM is having of late in presenting its music and specialties over classic hits stations in So-Cal. Sorry, it's just the added variety that NY's CBS-FM presents (A to Z included) that is superior to KRTH and other stations with small and repetitious playlists there. KRTH does not do large specialties as thorough as CBS's. It's just reality these days, unfortunately. Someday, they'll get in the groove too.

Re: FEEL SORRY FOR NY, LOVE YA....BUT YOUR RADIO DIAL LEAVES A LOT TO BE DESIRED

I would say having lived in both NY & LA among many other cities in the country. NY's AM stations are far superior, but LA's FM dial blows NYC out of the water. I will give NY credit for a dance station. Shocked there isn't one in LA.

SF has good radio too. It's debatable whether it's better than either city.
