Fifteen iHeartMedia Stations Stunting Ahead Of New Network Launch

https://radioinsight.com/alert/1898...tations-stunting-ahead-of-new-network-launch/

According to the release this new Iheart Network is going to aim at African American audiences. Iheart has released the list of stations that will get this affiliation. Note I heard of this on the Iheart app as mainly a podcast production for the Iheart app initially. Apparently they decided to go for Iheart O&O's as well.

The list of stations currently stunting include:

Conservative Talk “Fox News 640” WGST Atlanta
Sports “Fox Sports 1340” WYNF Augusta GA
Christian AC “Up 98.7” W254AZ Belmont/Charlotte NC
Alternative “Alt 99.1” W256BT Cleveland
AC “Mix 94.7” 1460 WGSY Phenix City AL/94.7 W234BX Highland Pines/Columbus GA
Sports “1130 The Fan” WDFN Detroit
Sports “Fox Sports 1440” WGVL Greenville SC
Sports “Fox Sports 1670” WMGE Macon GA
Alternative “Alt 93.3” W227BF Minneapolis
Gospel “Hallelujah 97.5” W248BQ Nashville TN
“Sports 1280” WODT New Orleans
Alternative “Alt 105.3” WNOH Norfolk
Spanish Oldies “La Preciosa 1440” KFOO Riverside CA
Liberal Talk “Real Talk 910” KKSF San Francisco
Conservative Talk “South Sound Talk 850” KHHO Tacoma/Seattle WA
With the flip, multiple staffers have exited the affected stations. At WODT New Orleans, 10am-12pm host David Grubb, 12-2pm host Eric Asher, and 4-6pm host Kaare Johnson depart.

More coming.

As I said when this was posted on the Atlanta board, I believe this is a great idea, very timely given the BLM movement.

But will it last? I don't know about other metros, but the two local stations here in the Seattle metro that cater to African Americans are not in terrific economic shape, and a third one switched to Punjabi programming two years ago.

Was there ever a "black talk" network before in this country? I feel like there was one, but my memory is fuzzy.

I don't recall a 'black talk' network, although there have been syndicated talk shows aimed at African Americans... Al Sharpton's is one of them. And there used to be a 'Mutual Black Network' -- or possibly another major radio network had a 'black network', as I think they had newscasts. I think it was in the 1970's.

Correct, and in 1981 Mutual sold the Black Network to Pittsburgh based Sheridan Broadcasting. They operated as Sheridan Broadcasting Network until the 90s, when it merged with National Black Network. At that time, they renamed as American Urban Radio Networks, and they're in business now:

Great, but will it bill?

You obviously didn't read the story posted at All Access:

The network will operate as a standalone business unit within the company, supported by iHEARTMEDIA resources; rather than traditional advertising, the network will be supported by "founding partner" clients including BANK OF AMERICA, CVS HEALTH, GEICO, LOWE’S, MCDONALD’S USA, SONY, 23ANDME, and VERIZON. CLEAR CHANNEL OUTDOOR AMERICAS will also serve as a national marketing partner.

You can make a business around that kind of support. That might be a good model for other companies to look at.

Sometimes it helps to think outside the traditional advertising box.

Quoting the Radio Insight article:

"The on-air product will be funded not just by traditional advertising, but also through financial support of what are being identified as National Founding Partners"

To me that reads that some amount of financial support will still be coming from traditional advertising billing.

Quoting the Radio Insight article:

That's not correct. Here's the press release from iHeart:

https://www.iheartmedia.com/press/b...irst-its-kind-247-national-and-local-all-news

Here's the key paragraph:

Instead of traditional ad supported media, BIN is enabled by the support of National Founding Partners who share and support the mission of BIN: Black Information Network. These partners are Bank of America, CVS Health, GEICO, Lowe’s, McDonald’s USA, Sony, 23andMe and Verizon.

"Instead of traditional ad supported media."

I wonder if iHeart's weekly public affairs programming will get buried on BIN at 5AM or 6AM instead of iHeart's full power stations in each market?

St Louis and Dayton are included on the list.

After iHeartMedia moved Adult R&B “Majic 103.7” W279AQ Mascoutah/KATZ-HD2 to 104.9 KLLT Columbia IL/St. Louis on July 18, the company has now debut new programming on the translator.

W279AQ/KATZ-HD2 has become the sixteenth affiliate of iHeart’s “Black Information Network“. And the company’s Classic Country 1340 WIZE Springfield OH joins as well. WIZE targets the adjacent Dayton market.
