Link: http://pressreleases.scripps.com/release/846 I'm shocked that the bee has gotten so huge that ABC is airing a portion of it in prime-time
I'm not really sure that this is a good idea or not. I think that the way ESPN has done it for the past 10 years with the coverage including the final rounds was fine.Kevin Lagasse said:Teacher: Okay, Timmy. The word is "NUTS".Timmy: Can that be used in a sentence?Teacher: Is ABC freaking NUTS?![]()
Q: Can you get an elephant drunk?A: Yes, but he still won't go up to your apartment.
There's no doubt Game shows will make a comeback.I wish the chair was never canned.I think that was the last time I actually watched ABC...(for a weekly reason)fred flintstone said:The wave of reality shows demonstrates people will watch ANYTHING.And apparently ABC plans to position this as a reality show not an academic exercise. If this works, maybe they'll bring back the GE College Bowl.Maybe quiz and games shows could make a comeback. Maybe Harvey Fierstein in the Center Square.Q: Can you get an elephant drunk?A: Yes, but he still won't go up to your apartment.
Obviously these children in the National Spelling Bee are more educated than you. Your response further proved that.Kevin Lagasse said:Teacher: Okay, Timmy. The word is "NUTS".Timmy: Can that be used in a sentence?Teacher: Is ABC freaking NUTS?![]()
Network, there was no need for that. I can express an opinion and so can everyobdy else.network said:Obviously these children in the National Spelling Bee are more educated than you. I'm thinking they plan to look at this as their version of American Idol, but without the singing and singers.fred flintstone said:The wave of reality shows demonstrates people will watch ANYTHING.And apparently ABC plans to position this as a reality show not an academic exercise.
I doubt they'll bring back the GE College Bowl and a quiz showwould be better suited for daytime than primetime anyway. Look at the short-term success they had with Millionnaire as an example of this. Millionnaire is florishing in syndie/daytime.If this works, maybe they'll bring back the GE College Bowl.Maybe quiz and games shows could make a comeback.
It depends......if it goes up against anything on Mon-Thursday Night it'll get killed by the usual suspencts, but if they bury it on friday or saturday night it'll be #1 for the nightradioguy555 said:This is really great news, even though I can't picture the bee being a successful ratings-getter in primetime. But It will definitely be something different for primetime viewers to watch, which is always good thing.
ABC is going to air the final round prime-time coverage on Thursday Night 6/1. ESPN will air coverage in the daytime on Friday 6/1 also.mr_mark_taylor said:It depends......if it goes up against anything on Mon-Thursday Night it'll get killed by the usual suspencts, but if they bury it on friday or saturday night it'll be #1 for the nightradioguy555 said:This is really great news, even though I can't picture the bee being a successful ratings-getter in primetime. I think the game show marathon on CBS could give ABC a run for its money in the 8 PM EDT hour.Kevin Lagasse said:CBS: 8-Game Show Marathon [NEW] 9-CSI [REPEAT]FOX: 8-70s Show [REPEAT] 8:30-70s Show [REPEAT] 9-So You Think You Can Dance [NEW]NBC: 8 to 10 The Office Marathon [4 REPEAT EPISODES]UPN: 8-Everybody Hates Chris 8:30-LOVE, Inc. 9-Eve 9:30-Cuts [ALL REPEAT]WB: 8-Smallville [REPEAT] 9-Supernatural [REPEAT]Source: tvguide.com
I'm going to make a bold prediction, The Bee will be number 1 in the prime-time ratings next Thursday Night when it is on ABC. Also I think that this year's bee will have a record amount of US TV viewers in the history of the Bee being on national TVfred flintstone said:June 1st. Sweeps is over and we are into Summer TV.Ad rates go down.Spelling Bees and Game Show Marathons are cheap.Income - Expense = ProfitEven with lower revenues, cheap shows can show a profit.
Link: http://www.latimes.com/entertainmen...ing30may30,1,6315908.story?ctrack=1&cset=true From USA TODAY 5/23:"We're really excited about this," said Andrea Wong, ABC's executive vice president for alternative programming. Wong, who brought the British hit "Dancing With the Stars" to the U.S. audience last year, said she's been eyeing the Bee as a network television prospect for years."These are amazingly determined kids who have spent hours and hours every day practicing for this one moment of the year," she said. "They're all incredibly likable kids that you're rooting for. These aren't nerds; they are intellectual athletes.
Link: http://www.usatoday.com/news/education/2006-05-23-spelling-bee_x.htmBut consider: ABC booted the Miss America pageant last year, and for the first time, the network will broadcast in prime time the final rounds of the Scripps National Spelling Bee on June 1. And that's not the only indication of the increasing appeal of spelling phenoms:
