First day of NBC 10 NEWS in HD: Thoughts?

Today, WCAU NBC 10 finally debuted their HD newscasts during the 4 PM broadcast today including new HD studios. What did you think of their new set and the HD quality on the newscasts on WCAU today?

Wow...plexiglass and a newsdesk you can see through. It's just so...bleh...

The graphics package isn't that great either (a little bit reminiscent of the standard NBC-HD rollout with a little bit of the old NBC10 design bits here and there). And the bottom newscrawl is barely legible if you're watching through a DTV converter on an SDTV although I can't imagine it being better on HDTV.

Field reports and brief spots are still in Standard definition (I think channel 6 had their field reports done with HD cameras--albeit lower resolution--from the outset).

I didn't watch the news on channel 17. Does anybody know if that broadcast was in HD?

Recognizing that design is subjective, my personal reaction was a shrug of the shoulders. It looks nice enough, with the same old gizmos and such that bring nothing of value to the underlying content. One question--what the heck is with the 'cloud' type thing going on during the lower-third graphics?

Not impressed. As already mentioned, only the studio shots are HD. This will probably change in coming weeks, however some of the graphics are still sd. They had since August to start this process couldn't they have updated or atleast up convert the earthwatch intro?

I didn't catch the AM version this morning, however the :25 after updates during today, aswell as the weather spots were all in SD. I found this very odd.

It wouldn't suprise me if 10 still does ch17's news in SD. Afterall these are the same people who reserve their "exclusive" 7 day forecast for ch10 broadcasts only. Ch17 get a 5 day forecast.

The set is very blah. Looks like a sterilized germ free room. I see it still can change colors. Just what we need when ch10 does those weather modes.

Just like how they only show the seven day forecast during the second half of the 4 and 5pm shows. I know it is to get people to stick around, but if I wanted the full forecast I would just turn the channel since no one else feels the need to do this.

NBC10 gets my vote for "Lamest HD rollout EVAR!" in the Philadelphia. This vote would have gone to WFMZ, but theirs was more understated than anything. It's no wonder the network is being forced to program Jay Leno to the 10PM slot M-F... :-|

17's news last night looked like it was in HD. During live studio shots it looked like full HD. Any reports or non-studio location shots were centered 4:3 with those wavy pillarboxes on the sides.

Well 17 was lucky and got HD 10. Today show was still stuck with SD until around the 9:55 updat, when the morning producers must've finally remembered how to work it. Weather cut in remained SD, but those are taped anyway, and as mentioned nobody at 10 seems to be able to edit HD.

So this was the best for last?

What a dissapointment. I don't know what it is but the anchors seem unconfortable, the switching back and forth between HD and field reports in SD. I know over a year ago I asked Tim Furlong when they would go HD and he just laughed at me. Not a priority for NBC. And they wonder why thr ratings are low.

NBC10 cut corners with their new HD news set. The anchor desk would have been better suited with large plasma screens similar to those used by NBC News and NBC O&O NBC4 in New York instead of clear plexi-glass. The additional monitors would have cost thousands more but would have been helpful.
