First taste of NBC Sunday Night Football is tonight

Wanted to remind anyone who cares at all that NFL fans can get their first glimpse of NBC Sunday Night Football tonight at 7 when the Philidelphia Eagles take on the Oakland Raiders in the annual Hall of Fame preseason game in Canton, Ohio. It is a rematch of Super Bowl XV.

Personally, I'll just tape it for the opening credits and watch the first 30 minutes of it to see how NBC does. Personally, it's not that high on my priority list. I could care less about the Eagles and I Don't like the Raiders. I think the reason for this matchup was John Madden being inducted to the hall of fame because he coached the Raiders.

If I were NBC, I would have chosen Cowboys vs Steelers for the Hall of Fame game since Troy Aikman was also inducted to the hall of fame and he also beat the Steelers in Super Bowl XXX. Besides, Madden had already left the Raiders when they played the Eagles in Super Bowl XV (By the way Oakland won 27-10 and got in as a Wild Card).

I'm so geeked for it.

I know it's just a silly preseason game.

But this is something different.

For one, NBC has the NFL again.

To me, the NFL means more with NBC for the fact they

covered many Super Bowls dating back to the AFL days.

And I loved their old AFC Coverage.

Curt Gowdy & Dick Enberg made their names with the NFL on NBC package,

Bob Costas is back doing some great NBC Sports again alongside

with the awesome Cris Collinsworth, Sterling Sharpe, Peter King, and Jerome Bettis.

But also, Al Michaels & John Madden are part of the crew.

I personally feel that ABC didn't give them the respect they deserve.

And Madden will make history as he will work for all four networks with the NFL

CBS (1980-93)
FOX (1994-2001)
ABC (2002-2005)
NBC (2006-Present)

Madden is the greatest NFL announcer of all time, PERIOD.

And AL Michaels wil join Lindsey Nelson, Curt Gowdy, Dick Enberg, Marv Albert,

and Bob Costas among the all time great NBC Sports announcers in my book.

I don't care for CBS of FOX's Coverage of the NFL.

I'm somewhat skeptical on ESPN on whether or not they will make MNF fun again,

as well as the NFL Network's new deal.

So to me it's NBC all the way.

Let's hope they add an extra game on that one week where there isn't any

scheduling, it's ridiculous that there building it as the biggest night of the week,

and there's only 16 games while MNF gets 17.

I would like to the posters to please post any thoughts on tonight's broadcast while it is on like the format of the broadcast, camera angles, production, etc. here in this thread.

Fox still has the NFC games, CBS has the AFC, NBC has Sunday Night, ESPN has Monday night.

The teams are picked on a rotation basis, and that decision is made by the NFL, not NBC.

I'm watching the game.

It's a lot like the old ABC MNF style.

Except for Cris & Bob making you feel more NBC friendly.

Andrea Kramer is doing great.

They've use the instant replay slow mo to perfection early on in the game.

The only problem I had was they cut Al off twice while he was speaking.

ESPN and the NFL Network have a tough act to follow on NFL Primetime

Review of NBC FOOTBALL

Good graphics, love the rather unobtrusive NBC NFL INFO BOX.

NFL's Edict on Local TV crews on sidelines has made the lines very much lonely..

Andrea Kremer a good get for NBC

its like the MNF crew never left abc...

Overall grade... A-

big shoes to fill, but a good start

but i do miss seeing the local tv crews on the sidelines

I like NBC's production better than ABC anyway. No Disney here! It was weird seeing Al Michaels hold an "NBC Sports" microphone! Anyways, the game was in HD and boy does it look a hell of a lot better than SD! I just hope that this will be the shot in the arm NBC needs to regain their prominanace.

By the way, with the NASCAR race post-coverage ending a bit after 6 PM (ET), what was the schedule on the west coast for all this? Here in Hartford/New Haven, once the racing stuff finished, we had an abbreviated local newscast, "NBC Nightly News" at 6:30 and "Dateline NBC" at 7 PM (ET), followed by football.

Reggie White was a Philadelphia Eagle for the majority of his NFL career. So both teams had a connection to the HOF.

I must admit, the coverage was not too bad. I really liked the scoreboard that NBC used. Art Shell didn't do too bad coaching the Raiders. The scoreboard looks more like a real one. Plus, no annoying graphics like FOX does.

BTW, the pregame show for NBC's Football package will be called "Football Night in America", sort of a play on words from the CBC's "Hockey Night in Canada". Jerome and Sterling will join Bob and Cris next week (8/13) in Cincinnati for the Redskins/Bengals game.

Did anyone else lose the sound for the first couple of plays? I haven't seen that mentioned anyplace but it happened in Green Bay...althrough I could still hear background noise and the unnecessary swoosh of th egraphics.

It looked like last year's MNF with a peacock added, except for Costas/Collinsworth/Kramer.

The graphics were VERY difficult to read on my 27-inch set - I'm a bit nearsighted, but still, the time and quarter at the end of the scoreline were impossible to read. And many of the player graphics had type that was too small.

In short, no new ground broken here.

I thought "Sunday Night Football" was a nearly-seamless transition from ABC to NBC.
The format we're all used to with ABC didn't lose anything, and I think the addition of Costas and Collinsworth will only help. I admit, it could be a problem if the studio guys are allowed to "chime in" during games every week. Hopefully, this will only take place during blowouts.
Collinsworth got off some great rips on "T.O"., and Costas and Michaels clearly enjoyed being able to 'talk shop' on the air.
Graphics were pretty close to what MNF had since about 2000. NBC seems to have a thing about weird-looking small fonts, though.
One thing I didn't miss was the players do their own intros. This was a good idea at first, but got too gimmicky, with so many guys from the University of Miami calling out "DA U!", guys mentioning their high schools(and sometimes junior high schools), etc.
It was almoast refreshing hearing Michaels just give the lineups himself!
I also enjoyed the last bit of Aikman's visit to the booth, with Madden saying, 'It's an honor to be in your class'.

IIRC, ABC didn't do this for preseason games either. Since many players (yes, even a few starters) didn't make their teams' rosters, I think they waited until the week between the 4th preseason and the first regular-season game to tape the intros. I'll guess NBC will do the same thing if they keep these intros going.

Overall NBC Sports did a great job, looked 100% better then when ABC. One thing I thought NBC would of done different is move the score graphic to maybe the top then again thats FOX with the top score. Wait didn't NBC start the bottom score graphic with college football then ABC copied with using that on MNF. I would of liked it if NBC used the graphic they had with AFL it was like a L score graphic and it was different from what everyone else had. But the bottom score looks good they don't show their transparent NBC logo like ABC did with their bottom score which was just awful. Sunday Night Football on NBC looks just like Monday Night Football but done much better. Glad to see NFL back on NBC.

The reason there isn't a 17th Sunday night game is because Christmas Eve falls on a Sunday this year. NBC does have a late afternoon game on Christmas Day though to make up for it.

It also has to do with game 2 of the World Series usually falling on a Sunday night. The NFL has done this for a few years now.

I agree with those who felt that seeing Bob and Cris interrupt during the game is annoying. It was odd having 2 prominent play-by-play guys on the screen at the same time. As much as I like them, let's hope they will stay put in the studio and will only work before the game, at halftime, and after the game.
