FM 94! WMEV -- What HAVE They Done to Improve Ratings?

WMEV is up higher than I've ever seen them...I'm out of signal range, so what kind of effort have they been putting forth? Or is it simply because other stations have declined?

Eric

They have not done a thing, as far as I can tell. No changes or outside marketing to speak of. Diary placement? Maybe.

Jim Mabe is a strong talent for the region...great sense of humor. I love how he refers to the station as the "compound!" Their imaging has also improved as well.

Thanks highpeak. I'll be sure and give Mabe the compliment. I think the main reason for our increase in the trends was because of the Christmas music that we played during the Holidays. I got a ton of compliments. We do "All Christmas" Saturdays during December and an All Christmas Lunch Hour and play about 3 Christmas songs per hour. Most Country stations stay away from Christmas music and don't play much at all. Any trend increase is nice but a "book" can be completely different. A trend is just a trend. We don't play the "ratings" game anyway. We do what we're supposed to, entertain and serve the community!!!

A day or two of solid Christmas seems to me to be a pretty good idea, especially if you give it a "holiday special" type feel. My GM made us go Christmas for a total of 14 days mid-December to Christmas...It wasn't my call, and I got soooooo burned out by it. I don't know where we were in the county, but I know it hurt us badly trying to break the metro. Bring on the baseball so I can get back in the book for SOMETHING!!

I was in JC last week (in from sunny NC) visiting a buddy of mine and listened to WMEV FM94 and I don't know what anyone would believe to be great about that station! That Mabe guy is using the same lines he used when I was there 5 years ago...talent is weak! HOWEVER, WXBQ is sounding pretty good! Liked the afternoon guy and night guy. Now, that's a country station. WMEV is a very small sounding station with a huge signal. Too bad.

Who is the pd there anyway? Sounds like they could use one.

My 2 cents...back to the car lot!

One thing I have noticed in previous markets I have worked in, When you have such a MONSTER HERITAGE station around like in this case, WXBQ, who is always community minded and has a staff that has been around for a long time. It is hard for an Up and Coming Country competitor to win. In the other case I know of is when I was in Panama City with WPAP and Kat Kountry came after them WPAP always had a 12 share versus a 4 share for WAKT. I am not sure if FM 94 has signal issues or not, but from the look of their ratings, they should have made a bigger "dent'" against WXBQ by now. Maybe they spend too much on their AC and ROCK station and should devote more to FM 94. But one could argue because it will help us here at WQUT (Where I resides doing nights) and our sister station 1049 The PEAK if they did that. That's my two cents worth!
