FM Bandscan at Mount Lillian (6140', on Chelan/Kittitas County line) 7/30/20

Went on another hike this morning before the weather got too hot. (It was 101 degrees in Ellensburg today, and when I left the Mt. Lillian trailhead around 1:30 it was already pushing 80 degrees.) Pics/audio to come later. Mount Lillian is a relatively nice hike, better in late spring but OK currently. Flowers are dying fast, but still lupine, Indian paintbrush and fields worth of daisies to explore. For views, Mt. Rainier was seen but a little smoky/hazy from a nearby fire (90% contained). Mt. Stuart and the Enchantments were solid, and I could see a smoky Glacier Peak out in the distance (60 mi NW, 10000 feet). Could look right over the hills into the Wenatchee valley as well. FM band changed every half-mile, one turn up a hill and different stations came in.

Different FMs came in due to the line-of-sight I had at each viewpoint. My path followed the Mt. Lillian trail (#1601) then to a Jeep trail known for spectacular views of Mt. Stuart, Rainier and Glacier Peak. At that viewpoint Olympia FMs were very loud, KXXO was full 10 bars. Google Earth plot shows no mountains above 5000' on that path, wide open scenario (I was at 5800 at that point). Climbing to the next viewpoint with an eastern line-of-sight (no views due to forest burn) and a little more of the west to NE view, that's where I started to hear KCDA, the weaker translators, etc. That path was also wide open. K231CU was heard on the summit of Mt. Lillian.
Two guys on motorbikes and a group of two ladies and their horses (trail is open to horses starting at the nearby horse campground) were all I saw. Two chipmunks, small lizard, thought I heard a coyote bark out in the distance, a red-tailed hawk and some Steller's jays for animals. I saw definite coyote tracks but no animal nearby.

I'd probably get altitude sickness before I made it to Camp Muir...I sometimes get really bad headaches above 6000'. Mt Lillian, not so much, but on Tumac I had a moderate-level headache as soon as I started descending the mountain. That's why I always keep at least two Bayers in my backpack at all times. Probably has to do with dehydration or sunlight if anything. Your body needs to drink more water at higher elevations. About 2 liters of water come with me at all times, and I have a water filter now in case I run out and there's a nearby stream or creek.

Just out of curiosity, any chance of capturing these scans and uploading them to YouTube? All I use for mine is my phone. I know the whole copyright thing, but with my scans, I’ve been able to mute anything that’s been flagged using the Studio Editor. (I may download another deal of software with more editing skills. Also, I’ve had issues with MediaFire on my end, and I just don’t feel comfortable clicking on the links.)

It would be audio only (I carry a VN-721 Olympus voice recorder on me in case Es or Ms hits). I just prefer doing it this way because I mostly record up in the mountains for unusual signals, like the dueling KNCW translators on 95.1..it was cool to hear the echo!
Wed/Thur I am off. I am busy on Wednesday, Thursday will be my hiking day. It will be rather cool in the mountains. I am leaning on either doing either Easton Ridge (4475') or Thorp Mountain (5854') both in the same area near Cle Elum Lake, or Burnt Mountain/Shellrock Peak (6400-6800') north of Rimrock. Huckleberries have apparently started riping earlier than normal this year, and the first two have huckleberries - not sure about the latter, but the latter has wonderful views of the Mt. Adams, Rainier and the Stuart range.
