FM Bandscan from Granite Mountain Lookout, Adams County ID 7/19/25

*Can't count anything for the logbook due to the location outside of McCall/Cascade.*

Granite Mountain can be seen from the entire 'long valley' between Lake Cascade and McCall. The 8,478 ft. summit is a steep but reasonable walk-up from the trailhead near Goose Lake and Brundage Ski Area. This is now the highest mountain I've successfully hiked since moving to Idaho. St. Mary Peak in MT still holds the record at 9,351 ft. All but the last 100 feet are the usual Boise, Baker City, a few Twin Falls and McCall FMs, with plenty of HD hash. Most Boise translators, too. But then you get very close to the lookout, and the radio dial changes dramatically. From this point, I logged my furthest-ever mountaintop FM DX (non-meteor scatter, non-Es). I was kicking myself for not bringing the recorder for even more proof. But I don't bloat things out of proportion, of course.

The views are 360 degrees in all directions. From here you can see 30-40 peaks, at least. Maybe more with binoculars. The Seven Devils near Hells Canyon are easily seen as are the Wallowas above Baker City and La Grande. To the east you can see the Lick Creek Range and deep into the Salmon River Mountains. There are probably peaks I could see that have never been climbed by man, given the lack of 4WD roads in some areas. Straight north is the Riggins area and the Salmon River canyon, nationally-known for its whitewater rafting. To the south is McCall, Donnelly and Lake Cascade, also New Meadows and Council area, and the West Mountains. The more-interesting FM scan came from a point about 10 feet below the lookout (still in the grass and trees) looking NW to NE. When you take the Boise FMs out, the FM dial changes dramatically.

The hike in is like passing a garden of wildflowers. They were so beautiful. Lupine, lillies, Indian paintbrush, clarkia, even some wild parsley (and it smelled great. I didn't eat it.)

Now to the FM scan.

No 94.9 KIOK Richland WA? Starts beating up on KRVB way east of Baker City.
Same with 97.9 KZTB Milton Freewater and KQFC.
107.5 K298AC is now licensed to Boise on Deer Point with the rest of 'em.

Oops...I had the OPB translator, not KIDO. But I probably would have had them on southern-facing slopes anyway.
KRVB put out 60dBu, same w/ Magic 97.9. Way too strong to reveal KIOK or KZTB. I've had The Wolf from a little east of Warm Lake, and also from another summit near Secesh that I will post a scan for this week. That same summit also had a very strong KYSS-FM Missoula, and VERY little sign of Boise!
