FM Bandscan in the Ahtanum State Forest with several surprises. 6/19/2024

Enjoying the Juneteenth holiday with FREE parking in state lands, I decided to head for an area that I've never explored: the Ahtanum State Forest. Just outside of Tampico WA, the 75,000 acre forest has several 4X4 roads and a few hiking trails, as well as multiple campgrounds. Today's bandscan was at the Grey Rock Trail, which rises above Tree Phones Campground to a high point around 6100 feet where Mt. Adams can be seen, and prior to that, a summit point at 5800' where the entire Lower Yakima Valley can be seen, as well as nearby Darland Mountain, the Toppenish Ridge, and Horse Heavens. This may be one of the best bandscans I have ever done in a mountainous region. No E skip today, but look out! Distant DX abounds, and some of it *really* distant.
Pictures are coming. I saw a pack of elk including a calf at the 6000' level. I had little from the northwest (Seattle area), a little action northeast, many Portland FMs, and the rest was all from the south, and especially the SE. Several NEW stations to the logbook. With the TEF6686:

88.1 KYTR Union Gap (29mi) / KAYB Sunnyside (54mi) / tentative KTCV Kennewick (94mi) / KQHR Hood River (56mi)
88.3 KMLW Moses Lake (86mi)
88.5 KLRF Milton-Freewater OR (147mi) with 60dbu signal+ / way over KYVT Yakima (29mi, heard in KLRF null)
88.7 KDMB Moses Lake (88mi) / K204CZ Kennewick (The Effect - 11W 99mi. NEW!)
88.9 K205FT Yakima (KOLU, 34mi) - no sign of KCSH Ellensburg.
89.1 KFAE Richland (96mi and 72dbu signal. You can tell there was FULL line-of-sight to Tri-Cities. These signals were stronger than some Yakima full-power FMs.)
89.3 tentative KVRA Sisters OR (would be 168mi), otherwise just weak KFAE splatter and static
89.5 KSOH Wapato (29mi)
89.7 KOTD The Dalles OR (50W 55mi, NEW!) / tentative KLCC Eugene OR in and out with NPR news programming. KWWS Walla Walla completely off the air. They would have been 60+dbu full signal, if they were on.
89.9 KKJA Redmond OR (143mi) / K210CX Yakima (AIR 1, 19W 29mi)
90.1 KOLU Pasco (98mi)
90.3 KNWY Yakima (29mi). Couldn't get a decent enough null on them to try for La Grande/Boise.
90.5 KQBC Benton City (76mi) / K213DM Heppner OR (KVIP Redding, 23W 109mi, NEW!) / K213DU Goldendale (KFAE, 15.5W 55mi, NEW!)
90.7 KNWR Ellensburg (63mi)
90.9 KRBM Pendleton OR (120mi) / weak Christian signal in KRBM null, turns out to be K215CR The Dalles OR (AIR 1, 10W 55mi, NEW!)
91.1 KYPL Yakima (34mi)
91.3 KGTS Walla Walla (145mi)
91.5 K218CX Yakima (KAWZ, 35mi) / KLWS Moses Lake (92mi) / KOPB-FM Portland (103mi)

91.9 KDNA Granger (29mi)
92.1 KUMA-FM Pilot Rock OR (120mi)
92.3 K222BP Prosser (KOLU, 23W 69mi) / KZUS Ephrata (91mi) / KGON Portland (103mi)

92.9 KDBL Toppenish (35mi)
93.1 KBOI-FM New Plymouth ID (NEW - 48KW 310 miles!!!) solid at 5800 ft. ledge much of the time with weak to fair signals. News/Talk KBOI. To this date, my furthest non-E skip/meteor FM DX ever from a mountain range. I can see why: the only obstruction is the Blue Mountains above Pendleton, and I'm at nearly 6000 feet. / weak KRYP Portland (103mi)
93.3 KRKL Walla Walla (145mi)
93.5 KACI-FM The Dalles OR (55mi) / KTRI Royal City (77mi)
93.7 K229AD Yakima (KDYK, 34mi) / KQFM Hermiston OR (97mi)

95.7 KKSR Walla Walla (146mi)
95.9 KRSX Goldendale (55mi) / KZML Quincy (84mi)
96.1 KLKY Stanfield OR (107mi) / way over K241CV Yakima (KYAK, 180W 34mi)
96.3 KRCW Royal City (89mi) / K242AX Hood River (KQHR / 250W 55mi)
96.5 K243CK Pendleton (KUMA-AM, 250W 137mi) / weak signal with old rock buried under strong K243CK. ID was too weak. Either KOZE ID or KJIV OR, definitely didn't sound like KJAQ Seattle in the weak ID sweeper, I would recognize them any day of the week.
96.7 KMMG Benton City (88mi)
96.9 KZTA Naches (14mi)
97.1 KXRX-FM Walla Walla (146mi)

106.1 K291BV Wapato (250W 32mi) / unid with dead air, VERY strong. Is KWCQ Condon OR back on? No RDS. Could have also been the Bridge translator in Tri-Cities, but AM 960 was on the air.

That's really amazing. Better than aircraft DX because you use the mountain as a blocker and clear the path for the other direction. There are a couple of hills in the Chicago area that do the same thing, on a much smaller (and less distant) scale.

KBSU KBSX KIZN KBOI-FM KKGL & KQFC have been full power on the repaired antenna for a couple weeks now.
However 92.3 KIZN is low power while a new transmitter's installed.
Before the band became clogged I could get most of Washington on FM most of the day in Boise.

That's why KIZN wasn't there. 92.3 probably would have made it to the Cascades on full-power. Which means that on my upcoming trip, KIZN won't make it far into the mountains.
The others you listed except 93.1 are blotted out by SE WA or Yakima radio stations.
I wonder how far KDZY, KGSY, KUJJ, and other McCall FMs go. They aren't high-power for the most part.

Pictures still forthcoming, but I have a compilation of some DX clips from the area attached, including multiple Boise FMs. There's a lot of wind noise on some of them however, my apologies.
