Killed two peaks with 'one stone' yesterday, climbing up to the top of Burnt Mountain north of Rimrock/US-12 (6568') where I was greeted by two military jets doing exercises over the mountain (!); and then walking the Ironstone Mountain trail to the junction with the Shellrock Peak Trail #1132. You cannot access the peak through the trail, instead you have to walk off trail to the tarn lake at the bottom of the mountain, scramble through a little forest and then rock hop over scree/boulders. Thank goodness I had poles to decide which ones were loose and which ones were not. It took me about 30 minutes to climb to the top of the mountain, where I could see Mt. Stuart, Rainier, Adams, St. Helens and even the top 1000 ft or so of Mt. Hood in Oregon! There was a cool rock 'shelter' made from scree rock that kept a bunch of shade for my celebratory sandwich and fruit. Total distance from those peaks back to the trailhead was about 10 miles. Definitely a highlight for me, but I don't think I'll head back up there again. The Burnt Mountain trail on WTA's website said 500' elevation gain, it was more like 500' up and 400' down, another 250' up and another 300' down...
Like the Mt. Lillian trail, radio reception was very different depending on where on the trail I was. Eastern views had blistering signals out to Pendleton and even Baker City. Block the eastern views and Portland is LOUD, even heard KSND-95.1 Monmouth OR (1000 watts) for a new one, and a few from Corvallis/Eugene. Then Seattle was loud in some areas as well. At Shellrock Peak loud signals from the Astoria FM transmitters above Chinook WA were heard. Because it's in Yakima County and while I don't live in Yakima anymore I still keep a logbook, there are multiple new stations for the logbook. Here's the scan...
