FM Frequency of the Week 2018-19-20: 106.3 & 107.1

And now….we come to the end of this round of the FM Frequency of the week series.

We’re finishing the traditional U.S. Class A frequencies.

106.3

East Tennessee---WPFT “106.3 The Mountain” licensed to Pigeon Forge.

Retro/other: Dayton, OH: The London allocation west of Columbus was usually there.
I worked at a 106.3, which at the time was WPNM (call letters resurrected for one of WLIO (TV)’s relay stations. It sometimes made it to the Celina area, along with whatever Columbia City, IN was that week.

107.1
East Tennessee: Pretty open, with just an LPFM nearby in WLNU

Retro/other: Dayton, OH: Mostly WKFS, Milford (Cincinnati), but sometimes WJYD, Circleville OH or WDOH, Delphos, OH. This was also a previous employer. Despite ownership changes, Bob Ulm still works there. Bob is blind from birth, but in the 70s would walk to the station, fire up the old school automation system, and act as News Director. At one point the Ohio Society for the Blind had a Braille AP machine installed. He’s part of a morning show and writes a blog called---ironically—The Way I See It.

Retro DX Clip of the Week:
106.3 Very small market sounding WLNO, London, OH

107.1 WDOH, Delphos, sign off. http://46124.info/FM/Ohio/OH Delphos 107.1 1979 WDOH.mp3

This concludes our long look at the FM dial. If you’d like to bump any of the threads up, by all means do so. Thanks to all who contributed, and I may have a new series soon.

Far northwest Chicago. 106.3 is WYRB, a hip hop station from Genoa, IL. Fair signal from about 20 miles.

107.1 us a translator for WNVR (1030). WNVR is a couple of miles northwest of me. The translator is about 5 miles to my northeast with a fair-good signal. When thr translator is off, I get a weak signal from WSPY from Plano, IL.

Vancouver, WA. From my old location in Edmonds, there wasn't anything to get because I had first-adjacents on both frequencies, and in the case of 106.3, both sides with local KBKS/Tacoma at 106.1 and KWPZ/Lyndon, about 60 miles away at 106.5. Now, both are translators here in Portland. I can't remember which of Salem's AMs 106.3 is relaying, and 107.1 has relayed KQAC-HD2 for several years. Before that, it went through a couple other inputs. If those translators weren't there, 106.3 would be KLOO/Corvallis, OR and 107.1 would easily be KRQT/Castle Rock, WA.

106.3: A mix of WWMN Thompsonville, MI (rock // 100.3 WQON) and WGMV Stephenson, MI (classic country). WWMN used to be the original WKLA-FM in Ludington and had a fairly strong signal (much stronger than the current WKLA-FM's signal on 96.3)

107.1: Usually WCKC Cadillac, MI (classic rock)

Baldwin County, Alabama.

Nothing truly local on either frequency here.

106.3: WKNU Brewton with country music. Only during enhanced conditions. WSBZ Miramar Beach, FL with smooth jazz during coastal tropo.
107.1: Nothing. This is a first adjacent of local WGRV Pensacola, and eaten up by one of their HD sidebands. In all my time DXing I've never logged anything on this particular frequency here.

Mankato, MN

106.3-FM translator of Classic Hits 1170 KFOW "The Train" Waseca, MN
107.1-K296ER Kinship Radio translator (mostly in Spanish but some programming in English) of KJTS New Ulm

Lexington, KY
106.3: Excellent signal from local Top-40 "Hits 1063" WCDA, Versailles (3.7 kW @ 420' ~0 mi)
107.1: Strong signal from local contemporary Christian "Air 1" affiliate WLAI, Wilmore (3.6 kW @ 420' ~5 mi); When WLAI is off the air, it's a weak signal from Top-40 WKFS, Milford (Cincinnati, OH) (2.8 kW @ 866' ~75 mi)

Zachary, LA
106.3: Nothing due to first adjacent splatter from 106.5 KQXL, New Roads (50 kW @ 486' ~2 mi)
107.1: Very weak signal from country "Kajun 107" WHMD, Hammond (6 kW @ 328' ~54 mi). Sometimes it's country "Mustang 107.1" KOGM, Opelousas (990 W @ 817' ~52 mi)
