FM HD Signals to Be Easier to Receive in the Near Future?

Word comes today from AllAccess and other trades, that the F.C.C. has authorized the HD radio power increase requested by broadcasters. FM HD radio signals can be boosted by 6db. from the current maximum, to a total of 10% of the analog signals. Apparently this will permit an increase of up to 4x current permissible power levels. AM HD limits are apparently unchanged by this decision.
It will be interesting to find out if broadcasters in the New York area will promptly purchase more powerful HD transmitting equipment, or simply crank up what they currently have. And with all the hills and buildings in the area, it remains to be seen whether majorb power increases will actually yield significantly better reception of FM HD signals.
I hope so. There are many format holes, such as country, dance, and alternative rock that could be addressed by the presence of a decent HD2 or HD3 signal.
 
I think the problem in NYC is that there is too much rock on HD2 stations. 92.3-HD2, 101.1-HD2, 102.7-HD2, and 104.3-HD2 air rock programming. 103.5-HD2 is the gay pride channel which from what I've heard is not terribly different from WKTU. I would love to hear adult standards, 1955-63 oldies, and a return of deep tracks classic rock.

I want to hear a Club Phusion HD2 format that I heard down in Tampa on 93.3 WFLZ-HD2. Till then, my HD radio will collect dust (and its battery will die as with all the other Insignia HD radios) as I will be listening to Internet radio.

I hope the signals are more easily received, I have trouble right in the city, often I get the HD stations switching in and out of audio.

I find the HD2 to be pretty diverse. 101.1- HD2 Is Tony FM, which is kind of the old "JackFM" with less rock, they play rock but I wouldn't call it a rock format, is has a variety.

102.7 HD2 Has even more variety, It is now "Last FM Discover" which is based on songs popular on that website.

103.5 HD2 Is pretty different I think from KTU. The HD2 has much more modern dance. I actually find many similarities between the old Pulse 87 and Pride Radio, they seem almost equal music-wise to me.
 
I'll let you guys know how reception is in the Greenwich area. it always cut out at 1%
 
I suspect it will be a while before any stations increase their HD power, I think most will need to get new equipment to do this?
