A couple things that surprise me,
1. The weakness of KPQ-FM up there.
2. The amount of bleedover from KNHC. KFfM and KXRX are probably too far south and I started another thread about KUBE and KJR, why so much different signals? Aren't they on the same tower?

Bobdavcav, the frequencies that have nothing were usually static. KNHC was in and out, but I'm real surprised on how far it can go NE. I thought it would die before we got into the mountains, like what happened with KASB.

Yes, KPQ was super-weak. KFFM and KXRX were not there at all. I am surprised, as I heard a report once of a user [was it Littleboyblue? Forgot] that got KXRX 97.1 just E of the top of the pass. Was really trying for the Eastern WA stuff, not even KOHO 101.1 out of nearby Leavenworth made it in!

Yep, radio signals are weird things. Like I said, similar distance if not the same for KUBE and KJR and one is static-filled and the other is in full stereo? Weird. I have never had a great radio, but got KPQ-FM like we were in its city of license in Ellensburg last time I was over that way. BTW, have you tried and successfully recieved anything from the gorge as you drop into Vantage right at the cutoff to Pullman?

Haven't been out to Vantage yet. But I would likely get a lot of Spokane stations!

I was using a pair of headphones with my Grundig G8, and the stereo pilot [KJR 95.7] went in and out going down the mountain from the Martin Creek trailhead [Iron Goat Trail area]. KUBE was quite static filled and in and out in mono. Nothing farther than Victoria [c. 105 mi] was logged from FS 6710.

Hey guys, concerning central WA signals getting over Stevens Pass...FM signals really dislike making sharp 90 degree left hand turns. KOHO has to use two STLs just to get from their cute little studio to a transmitter site designed to cover Wenatchee to Cashmere. They actually translate directly from their from their studio on 99.9 at a very low wattage to cover COL Leavenworth. So no shock you don't get either one over the pass- that is one sharp turn that pass makes and there isn't a signal designed to make that turn.

I have heard my old 97.1 signal licensed to Walla Walla several times quite well just over the pass, but once you lose elevation you really don't get it back until you are near Wenatchee.

KPQ is a true powerhouse- it comes in clear pretty much all the time at my east facing house east of Woodinville. However, the same 90 degree angle applies when you are just this side of the pass....

You'd either get a lot of Spokane stations or nothing at all, the one time we were in the van in that area when I was riding with a friend over to Idaho, we couldn't get anything as soon as we started to drop down to cross the river. I still don't understand the KUBE thing, why is its signal so different than KJR? I just looked and they are on the same tower, at least they have the same coordinates on radio-locator, so I'd expect identical coverage. Hey WPB1999, how are WSB-FM, WSTR, and WVEE down there? They are all diclexed into one antenna as I imagine KUBE and KJR are, so you probably have the same coverage, right?

Bellevue High School is way over their FCC approved 60 watts at 18 m HAAT, in my opinion.

KUBE and KJR are not only on the same tower but also the same antenna. Also on that same antenna is 101.5 and 105.3

I generally agree with you FMS, but where is a school district, even Bellevue, going to find a bunch of extra scratch for a higher powered system? Get enough height, and have no other signal in the way, and you can hear things a long way away. Even 60 watt stations. I doubt the feds or the other stations is town would let them get away with over powered transmissions for long. One coastal LPFM (which i know would have been LUCKY to be outputting 100 watts) could be clearly heard in one location up in the Olympics close to 50 miles from the transmitter. Of course, you would have to drive about 45 miles closer to pick it up again, but you see my point?

I lose KASB right by Microsoft on 520 eastbound, and it never comes back. Can't be more than 5 miles from the tower. That seems like a 60 watt station to me.... ;D

I live about 15 miles from KASB and they come in clearer than many in the low power band. I guess having no adjacent channels to the North and East helps greatly. However, a little bird flew around my computer screen about a year ago showing a new 89.9 Class A allocation on Whidbey Island so pretty soon the only people to hear KASB will be the folks around Bellevue and terrain-shielded Kirkland.

I used to have KASB, very staticky, when I used to live in Bothell. Always used to mix with KGRG, but KGRG was the only one when KASB was off in the summer. I'm looking forward to another Es season on 89.9 I hope!

I also heard the crappy KBRC translator on 102.1, all the way to GROTTO [near Skykomish]. Must have been 60 miles. But then having the mtns in the way to block even the huge signal of KPQ kind of helps...

That KBRC translator is a local joke around Skagit County. Their main AM signal actually sounds better. And that's saying something given the hum and overmodulation on 1430 kHz.......

The peak of Ryegrass between Ellensburg and Vantage is a great spot to hear a little. It of everything. As you move east towards the river you can hear most of Eastern Washington and then gradually lose all but a few by the time you get to the river. Going West from Ryegrass on I 90 gets you a good shot to several Portland signals, more so than Seattle signals.

And if you ever go from Ellensburg down to Yakima, there's a couple miles dropping into Selah of great Portland signals.

Back in the early90's I used to regularly listen to Seattle FM's in Yakima proper, with a Kenwood receiver and an indoor dipole.

I've taken I-82 several times in the past to Yakima. Around the Selah Creek rest area, KKRZ, KRSK, the former KUFO [now KXL] and KLTH boomed in out there.
