Did anyone notice that there was a rebroadcast of a ESPN collage football game on WZZN 94.7 True Oldies Channel last night?

It was around 6:30pm last night while I was on my way home from work, I was listing to a song on the True Oldies Channel, called: Sugar Sugar by The Archies.

Right at the middle of the song all of a sudden there was a big switch over!
At first I thought it was a commercial of some sort, and they announced by saying "This is ESPN all sports radio!" and then I said to myself: "WTF in the hell is going on here? what is this crap? Why would the True Oldies Channel would rebroadcast a lousey collage football game on a FM frequency for?"
I thought any ballgames or any sports activities are usually being rebroadcast the AM band.

Can anyone tell me whats the deal on this?????.....

Probably because it was pre empted for another game on WLS or WMVP. That's usually the case.

WZZN ran White Sox games a number of times last year when they were still The Zone.

That was no "rebroadcast", it was The Rose Bowl live. There was a conflict with a Bulls game on AM1000. Nothing to get excited about. It won't be a common occurrence.

Couldn't The Score (WSCR AM-670) taken care of that?
or was there another game on the score last night?

The rights to air the Rose Bowl on radio belonged to ABC/ESPN. Thus, the game would naturally air on an ABC radio property. Since the Bulls were playing on WMVP, ABC chose WZZN, another of their stations, to air the Rose Bowl.

WSCR is a CBS-owned property. I doubt that ABC ever considered giving up airing the biggest college football game of the season, just to worry about keeping a four-hour block of canned oldies on the air.

It would seem to me to make more sense to run overflow games on WLS, rather than a FM Music station...

Hate to say it but, like music, sports sounds better on FM. And after all, it is the Rose Bowl.

What It Means

If nobody got the hint with the (automated - and satellite delivered) True Oldies format - is that ABC is using 94.7 to clear all the crap that they couldn't sell to affiliates - and generating revenues by promising clearance in a top 3 market.

Thats all. 94.7 is a throwaway...thats all.

Just my opinion...I could be wrong.

I got the same feeling, the Rose Bowl on the FM flamethrower
is further confirmation that 94.7 continues in a holding
pattern. Supposedly the ABC Radio Division is still up for
sale, but that was supposed to be a done deal by the end of
2005? What`s the hangup, or did Bob Iger change his mind again?

And they would have to preempt Hannity to put the game on WLS.

Looks like 890 is still the pride and joy, 94.7 still the redheaded stepchild and 1000 somewhere in the middle. Some things never change.

NO BIGGIE.

I think we're all reading "too deep" into this short four-hour pre-emption of 94.7's normal format. Sure, ABC has it's radio stations on the chopping block (for sale). But, I don't think that this pre-emption is anything more than a short break from their "True Oldies" format for a special game. After all, 94.7 is a major signal in the Windy City and the game would sound a heck of a lot better on FM rather than AM and this, in-turn, would provide much needed coverage (for commercial sponsors) in the nation's third largest market. Once the "Bowls" are over, it's business as usual. ABC made a very wise choice in putting the "True Oldies" format on 94.7 FM, after dumping "The Zone". I would NOT be surprised if, eventually, several dayparts will go "live" with local jocks. WZZN is taking over where the former Oldies/104.3 WJMK left off. Contrary to the "Madison Avenue" mind set, "there's money to be made" with the "baby-boomers". Oldies fits the bill, nicely. I like and listen to the "True Oldies" presentation of 94.7 in my office here in Massachusetts every day.

Why would ESPN 1000 farm out one of there network owned programs to a rival station and company in the Score. When they can put it on a sister Station like WZZN. That way they keep the ad revenues at ABC/Disney Radio and not give it to CBS Radio

I'm with you to this point.

It was a wise decision to ditch "The Zone", competition between WKQX had led WZZN to embarressing numbers. But True Oldies? It's not as if ABC is attempting an oldies format on 94.7, instead, they're running a satellite feed on a major signal in market #3.

Local jocks could change the picture durastically. While a local morning show is in place and there are plans for local PM drive, ABC has no public plans for local middays, evenings or overnights.

> WZZN is taking over where the former Oldies/104.3 WJMK left off.

Some are pondering the situation right now in New York. WCBS-FM was the radio station in New York, and had become more of a cultural icon along the lines of Macy's and Rockefeller Center. Yes, people liked the oldies in New York, but it was the iconic presence of the station with legendary talent that made the music a success.

I'd doubt that WJMK was to Chicago what Marshall Field's is (was in Fall '06). But in any case, how in any was is a satellite feed from Dallas taking off from where a local station "was". In fact, WRLL was taking over more-so from WJMK, as 1690 was adding 60's-era music until the debut of 94.7.

> Contrary to the "Madison Avenue" mind set, "there's money to be made" with

Back to the "cultural icon": listeners in New York and Chicago were attracted to the familiarity of their oldies outlets. Clearly, the billing was not adequate for CBS/Infinity on these two outlets. Yes, there is obviously money in the demo, but there's certainly a ceiling. It's not the most attractive format out there for advertisers, but it gives ABC an outlet to clear ads in market #3 as you said.

The fact that New York has no oldies outlet just shows the lack of advertiser support, not listener demand, for the oldies format. Infinity's launch of KFRC 99.7 in San Francisco brings a new spin to the oldies format, and so far it's seeing a good deal of success. As for True Oldies, it appears to be "...just the same old song".

> I like and listen to the "True Oldies" presentation of 94.7 in my office here

I'm presuming that you're listening to WCRN 830. That station gained older demographics by going to True Oldies (from standards), and even that station has a local morning show (in market #160). In addition, WCRN is a locally-owned AMer. The best comparison in Boston would be if WODS dumped it's oldies format, and 3 months later, WBCN gave up to competition from WAAF and WFNX and picked up satellite oldies, entirely off-the-bird. Would this be acceptable in market #9? So it's simply a joke in market #3.
