Consider establishing a country pirate!

Okay, where would we put it when almost all of the dial is filled with caribbean or hip-hop?

if you are referring to existing pirates, those stations have no "protectrd contours" to worry about.

I'm not from NY, but I never did understand why CBS-FM was off the air in the first place?

There were some turkeys (and that is being polite) at the top of CBS Radio who thought listeners of WCBS-FM were too old and flipped the station to the dreaded Jack format. (I don't want to rehash the entire story). After two years those responsible for this move were fired and WCBS-FM came back with a "Greatest Hits" format playing mostly hits from 1964-89.

JACK isn't doing well for CBS in other markets. JACK in Las Vegas was recently flipped to a simulcast of news/talk KXNT and isn't doing well in Chicago, though no flip has occured yet.

What is the target sales demo for Jack? How does that fit with the other products CBS in NYC offers?

They had tried many times for a Country Station, it just does not work in NY they can't get the sponsors. If I want to listen to country at times but I am more into Rock and Roll, I listen to Siriusxm radio!!! a lot to choose from on that I know Many people who bought Sirius so they can listen to country and everything else, Me I still like the personalities that talk on the radio

But Jack in LA is consistently top 5 in 25-54, and is about the 15th higest billing station in the country.

Vegas is overradioed, and CBS took a format that had a lot of overlapping competition to "save" KXNT and to pretty much block another FM talker for the moment... much like what KSL did in SLC or Entravision in New Orleans with WWL*. These moves were less about the existing format than about getting some sales demos for news talk and beating others onto FM.

There is now a news/talk in the northern part of the Tampa market. I wonder how long it will be before the switch is made to the FM for 970WFLA. When (and if, for the disclaimer market) the move is made, it will send ripples through the rest of the country.

But, what do you do with the 25kw 970 signal? Sell it? Broker it?

At this point, I'm sure the "Powers on Gandy" are watching the impact of that station.
Especially with the fact that HD has not been the stellar technology it was hoped to be. And 970 simulcasts on 97.9-2 to serve just that market.
