For the love of God, will you people stop?

Will some of you people just get a freakin life.

I still consider Tyrone home and enjoy reading about what is going on in the area.

I grew up listening to Dave Shannon on Q-94 and always enjoyed his show. He was the first person to give Sean McKay a run for his money in Altoona. Dave, you are a pro and I always enjoyed listening to you.

How is it that every topic turns into a slam Hilton topic?

Maybe it is because Steve is opinionated. I suggest that just like a radio station, if you don't like Steve's opinions, turn the freaking dial.

If you see something that is constructive that you can say, I bet the jocks who actually check this site would be happy to hear them.

Radio is a very ego-driven business. I remember days when people said the best thing I did on the air was pass off to the next jock. Thankfully, there were people throughout my career who gave me guidence and helped me improve.

Is there a chance that we can go a week without something turning out to be a slam on Hilton.

Steve and I have had our flare-ups in the past. If there is one thing he and most of the Altoona-State College jocks who know me will verify, I don't need a message board to slam someone. I have the balls to do it face to face.

Good luck, drive carefully and please tip your bartenders and waitresses at the end of the evening.

You know what? Every time you turn around someone is telling someone else to shut up. You, poster, have joined the ranks of those whining about the offensiveness of obviously protected speech. YOU are the one who should either chill out or stop reading this board. YOU are the one who's trying to stifle open discussion and debate. YOU are the one whose thinking is in league with the current lawsuit-happy, shoutout-happy politically correct hyperventilators. If we want to be nasty and/or immature and hide anonymously, why not? Most of us can figure out when someone knows something and someone doesn't. Most of us can deal with the over-emotional, ineffectual ranting that sometimes goes on here. And most of us want and embrace a forum where we can say what we really think. And most of us can tell the meaningful from the meaningless without the kind of restrictions you would, implicitly, impose on the language and content of this message board. Yes, sometimes it's more of a barfight than a polite and collegial disagreement. But no one goes to the emergency room as a result. I wish I could say you're making something out of nothing. But you aren't. What you're doing is advocating a dangerous position that's inconsistent with American values.

There is no protected speech on this board, nor is any guaranteed or required. You have a right to free speech, but not here.

I believe Mr. Harlow is asking for some civility.

Where in his post does he advocate imposing restrictions?

On the contrary. He says "just like a radio station, if you don't like Steve's opinions, turn the freaking dial". He didn't advocate censorship from the board admins, the government, or big brother. He advocated self-censorship in a request for a more civil discourse.

Overreact much?

Wow, I was called Mr. Harlow.

I enjoy the banter, but I get tired of every topic turning into a slam on someone.

Self censorship is still censorship. And it leads to wanting to -- and sometimes trying to -- censor others. Civility? Overrated. And, yes, speech on this board IS protected by the First Amendment, within the guidelines estblished by the people who established and/or now run it.

Sorry, no.

Quote from the site's FAQ:

"A post that is not related to radio, insulting, or that cannot be confirmed, is subject to editing or deletion.".

The speech here is as free as the moderators and administrators want it to be. The first amendment does not come into play here.

"...the Constitution does not apply here..."

My mistake.

If I remember right, there is Freedom of Speech given in the first ammendment. There is also purjury. MMMM, makes you think, how can you get charged with purjury with Freedom of Speech guaranteed?

If the First ammendment guarantees my freedom of speech, why couldn't I call a listener a F***ing idiot on the air and not worry about getting fired?

I'm happy that we are discussing the First ammendment instead of someone complaining that Hilton is the cause of everything wrong in radio.

Yep.

Get your own website and you can say whatever you please. Post at somebody else's website and they have the right to edit or delete your posts as they see fit. Are you going to harangue them for violating your right to free speech?

Yes, website owners have the right to eliminate certain things. But when they offer a public forum, precedent says there is a limit in what they can remove or prohibit. And individual cases can always be challenged. The FCC indecency/obscenity/profanity prohibitions are based on the same principle as the restrictions on a website. The basic premise is that the American people own the rights to the airwaves, that the regulators are there to guard the owners, and that the radio and television broadcasters are tenants on their frequencies (but not on their cable or satellite channels.) The prohibitions are supposed to reflect the current thinking of the community that is served. That's impossible to determine objectively, so the commission takes it upon itself to decide. Not a great idea, but fairly workable. (To show you the evolution of the standard of decency: early TV programs were not permitted to show people in bed together, even if they were married to each other.)

It evolves in both directions. No one thought twice in 1963 about public talk concerning the assassination of a President. Then, the President WAS assassinated and people started clamping down on talk like that.

This is an extention of restrictions on speech that has the potential to cause a public disturbance (yelling "fire" in a theater, to remind you of an often used example.)

Perjury is when you lie under oath. No one here is sworn to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, and this is a discussion board, not a courtroom. Related to this is filing a false instrument, like a forged check, or obstruction of justice. or filing a false police report. (If you don't like the guy down the block and tell the cops he's a child molestor, that's not protected.)

Certain types of advertising statements are not protected speech. For example when banks try to sell you mutual funds, they have to tell you that you may lose money. When Focus Factor tries to sell you pills to improve your memory, they have to tell you that their stuff hasn't been tested by pharmacy experts. Pharmacy companies have to tell you about the common side effects (dry mouth and next-day wooziness for sleeping pills, for example.)

So, the First Amendment isn't an absolute guarantee of unrestricted speech, but it is a standard against which speech issues are measured.

In the spirit of Thanksgiving I agree we all need to take a step back, take an inventory of our blessings and reach deep in our souls to extend our blessings to others ...that's why I'd like to invite Hitman to the Spackler1 household for Thanksgiving dinner - and he ask that you bring some of your old air checks with you. I'll have him over for Kwanza.

If I thought you meant a word of it...I'd be flattered...but I know full-well no one wants me over for Thanksgiving...heck I am not sure I want to spend time with myself for Thanksgiving....but on a lighter note...if anyone did have any tapes of my old stuff floating around, I sure would love to get a listen to that. Sadly, I lost all my old airchecks many years ago sometime between my marriage and my moving from one place to another.

Oh well....at least till I get struck with Alzheimers or something, I have my memories

Happy Thanksgiving all! I hope each and every one of you really do enjoy your day!
