I was using a combination of a Drake R8B and a Wellbrook 1530+. The 1530+ is mounted outside, is directional and rotatatable. I was unable to hear anything using my sloper or my QX loop. In the case of 162KHZ, I never heard an ID, and won't put it down on my "official" list, however the same show seemed to be broadcasting on the internet.
Yes, you can hear hets on the longwave frequencies, especially when they are very near even-digit frequencies. These days, there are so few broadcasters in longwave, you really just have to plant yourself on a frequency and wait.
The challange of longwave for midwestern DXers is that there are numerous beacons using morse code, and some airports broadcasting weather reports. For me, another issue is that I there are locals mixing at various places in the longwave band. However, this is only a problem with the sloper. There is a lot of noise to deal with also.
I never even considered DXing longwave from here in the Midwest until you guys started hearing the Euro MW stations.
