former 97.7 & 98.3 KWIN morning show co host Double J to return to radio .

Hey guys Double J who was on with Amanda King on 97.7 and 98.3 Kwin in the morning is returning to radio. Double J was let go I think in September and he is coming back to some radio station, he said so on his myspace page . if i hear which one when he lets us know I will post back later .

from Phillip from Galt . !!

anyone know how double j got his start....can't find it anywhere...a non radio friend of his once told me he started here in fresno on an am station, the only am station (english) would've been kicking 1220am, but i don't rememeber him on that station, he's probably too young to have been there

We had a 'Double J' working for us at KQEQ in Fresno, if it is the same person.

As I remember, he was incredibly talented at sales as well as on the air. We did everything we could to try and keep him in sales (where he could have made some real money), but he insisted on being on the air. After a short time at 1220 (now 1210), we brought him up north to KSTN. It wasn't long before he landed a gig at KWIN.

Very talented, and easy to work with is how I remember him. If not a tad crazy.

double j went by JB back on the AM days .....kickin' 1220 in fresno, stick is in fowler, ca though...someone else mentioned on another post a bunch of dj's who got there 1st radio gig with david caudillo, add double j to that long list. mr caudillo always hired jox w/ no experience.

What up..lol..interesting to see this posting.... but I'll tell you... I started out at KBOS in Fresno as a Summer Intern when Chris Miller was the Promotions Director and Mark Adams was PD..... I wanted to do an on air shift..but NO LUCK at KBOS . So Yes David Cauldillo and Al Perez hired me to do a Sunday morning shift...I wanted to do more so I started doing sales..(but I hated it)..lol..I wanted to be a freakn clown on th air...I admired people like Rick Chase on KMEL...and wanted to o what he did on the air.... and yes at the time it was Kickin 1220..then later went to Jammin 1210..The Crazy Man Woody Pena, David and his brother were the main jocks on the station at the time...Then Al Perez told me they were flippin formats and 1210 was getting ready to be a Spanish format, but told me he would talk to his business partner Knox in Stockton for me.... I came up to Stocktown and KNOX hired me to do afternoon drive for him on Power Oldies 1420....Yes I was going by JB back them (my initials)..Then right before I went on the air at Knox said I couldn't go by JB anymore and both my first and last name could only be on syllable...lol...so like 5 minutes before my first air shift i reluctantly settled on Jay James ....HAHAHAHAHAA......we were literally looking in the phone book for last names...lol.... then about a hour into my shift I asked John Hampton (the PD) for a CD collection to give away...He didn't know what I was going to do (and for some reason didn't ask me either lol)

I went on the air and told the story on how I was forced to change my name to Jay James...and if anyone could come up with a more creative name Id give them the CD collection.....some guy called in and said Jay James is two J's go by "Double J"....lol thats how my name came about I think that was in 98 or something... then when John fired me and Louie Cruz and John Christian hire me at KWIN I kept my name hoping to have at least one or two listeners that would remember me...lol..sad huh.... Then I ended up doing music at KWIN and just decided to keep the name.

I returned to KWIN to do mornings in 2005 and after a pretty successful 3 year run a new PD came in and...well...It was time moved on. Now I am freezing my azz off in Albuquerque New Mexico at KDLW..(www.wid977.net) I just started at the end of November 08 and hopefully we can start getting some better numbers..... I got a great PD out here ...Eddy Go!!!

On a side note..Roy Williams the GM at KWIN is the BEST GM you will ever work for and with....Ok im gonna stop typing now..

PS .What up Paul!! Thanks for the nice words man. I owe a lot to your dad Knox and his business partner Al Perez, plus David Caudillo for hiring a wanna be jock with no on air experience) and have to mention John Christian and Louie Cruz for taking a chance on me and teachn me how to schedule music plus the late Rick Chase for telling me not to give after gettin sh*t canned from a few gigs.... and the list goes on and on.... Roy Williams, Steve Perun, Michael Newman Lee Cagle, Pete Jones, Tim Gannon ..ok .Seriously Im going to stop now..lol.... Hope this clears some stuff up! Peace

Double J ;D

My wife used to work with Double J at AGM in Santa Maria years ago. He's always been a class act. The Valley definitely misses him. He pushes the needle, protects the station and delivers ratings, and that's rare in radio nowadays:)

Good Luck Double J!

kickin' 1220am and then later jammin 1210am was and still is the best radio station i ever heard. musically it was really together. i first heard about it from an article in the fresno bee, back when i lived in fresno. i take that back i first heard about it from a tv commercail on the video juke box. it was channel 53, 34, or 43 something like that. owned by gary cocola. the line up was great, all down to earth jox, and all from fresno and valley. victor vargas and raul lopez were the original pd/md's. but that only lasted about 4 months. the station really took off once Knox La Rue & Al Perez hired David Caudillo. 2 years before mega 979 hit the air they were already playing a jammin' oldies format, but it was more than that. I'm taking Blues, early 90's R&B, Old school hip hop. back then it was kickin 1220 vs. b-95. believe it or not b-95 started playing old school just to try to squash the little am station. even gospel on sunday.

BUT then Mark Adams was out at B95 and Jerry Clifton was in, KSEQ flipped to what is now Q-97, David Caudillo's old friend and former Program Director Greg Mack launched 94.3 The Party ( david Caudillo worked under Greg Mack at 94.3 FM years before) and of course the killer was Mega 979, then Art Laboe left b-95 bought 94.3 the party.

Double J mentioned a few jox that were there, but there were alot more that started there and went on to bigger radio gigs. swervin mervin, the sugarman, joe flores, sherry "sweet thing", woody pena, money mike, sammy diaz, richie rich caudillo (davids brother) kevin lee, homer leija....david even rehired victor vargas "humpty hump"

a note to "shake"

along with all those names mentioned, you forgot Nick Mata (The Mata Man) ...he was there in the beginning of Kickin' 1220 (1995-1998) He was also responsible for "Kickin' 1220 Sports Shorts" and later went on to work for "Jamz City Promotions" before starting his own promotion company "Skyline Marketing And Promotions." He is also a RIAA Certified PLATINUM promoter who's street team covered ground from Northern California to Southern California!

Hey Shake,

if David Caudillo is such a great molder of talent (so to speak) why hasn't he fixed peak's nicole problem?

I don't really have an opinion either way about Nicole's on-air talent or lack there-of. However, all the constant harping about her voice, which was used in a very limited way on the old Jack by the way, seems to me to stink just a little of jealousy. Is it that all those faces born to be on radio just can't stand a pretty face? She had quite the following on KFRE. I'm just throwing that out there...
