Former Bearcats Coach Bob Huggins in National Hot Water After Using Homophobic Slurs on 700WLW!

New York Post Reporting on the Situation

Current WVU Men's Head Basketball Coach (and Cincy icon) Bob Huggins decided it was a good idea to go on Bill Cunningham's radio show yesterday and call Xavier University basketball fans "Catholic f*gs" in response to questions about past Crosstown Shootout antics.

This story caught on like wildfire on a national level and Huggins was forced to make a statement on the matter later that day.

Do we think this gets him fired? Is Willie going to get in trouble, too?

He didn't learn from Thom Brennaman, eh.

Did Cunningham react (on air) with a laugh, a groan, a gasp of disbelief, or silence?

Was there no profanity delay? If there was, the board op should have dumped it.

I thought that word was right up there with the N-word as something you shouldn't say on air, and shouldn't allow to be said on air if it's under your control.

well that is the current state of most sports radio, locker room talk, fake laughter, morning Zoo radio adapted for sports.

Most of the time the "producer" is running the board and is part of the show, so they are not going to hit the dump button because they are too busy trying to come up with the next line in the conversation.

Someone will get slapped on the wrist, get a few days off, have to go to "charm school" to be re-educated on what is not allowed on that station, and next week they will be #1 in the book with all the free publicity.

Don Imus cried and sang kumbaya with Al Sharpton and still got fired after his racist comment, but that was mostly because advertisers fled his show.

And that's really what it will come down to in this case. Do any advertisers leave? So far the station is sweeping it under the rug and hoping it will blow over.

Not likely

The people I worked with who insisted that 700WLW be in the at work radio rotation used that kind of language and worse.
People who listen to the "Great American" think this is funny

Not just current: when the "original" sports talker WFAN discovered that Imus and his general "guy talk" was the perfect formula for mornings on a sports station, many others realized that the format is more guy talk and does not have to be 100% about teams and games.

Good point. Sometimes in the busy activity in the studio things get out before one asks, "did he really say..." and hits the button.

Today, appearances are critical. A major station of the largest group broadcaster has to take some definitive action, even if the person who made the comment was not an employee.

Perhaps Kiesewetter forgets the ‘80s and ‘90s when WEBN and other FMs around the country pushed the envelope with their vulgar, sophomoric, misogynistic remarks, especially on the morning shows. When the “prudes” complained and called for consequences, they were labeled “censors” and told “if you are offended then just don’t listen.” But when the shoe’s on the other foot…..

Hypocrisy on both sides. I think all of it’s in poor taste.
