Former KFRC DJ Jackson Armstrong was known as the Unknown DJ on WNBC in 1977

Jackson Armstrong tends to be well known for his stints on KKHR in Los Angeles and KFRC in San Francisco and for his wild persona. But he was a better DJ of his time than today's DJ's on FM radio.

Here's Jackson Armstrong on KFRC but this time not using the Unknown Alias.

I do know Jane Dornacker was from KFRC and KYUU in San Francisco before she died during a traffic report for WNBC.

The copter crash that killed Dornacker in New York was a real tragedy - it was traced to improper maintenance of the helicopter. Jane was beautiful (in a different kind of way), talented and funny. She was a songwriter and musician (Leila and the Snakes), and a stand-up comic. Her exchanges with Dr. Don Rose on KFRC were often hysterical. In keeping with Rose's generous spirit, after Dornacker's death, the good 'doctor' set up a number of benefits to raise money for Jane's now orphaned daughter. Her father had died shortly before Jane.

It was also the SECOND radio traffic chopper crash she had been involved in. The first one had happened just a month earlier.

I remember Jane very well. Her legacy song was the Tubes' hit, "Don't Touch Me There."

"[....] The smell of burning leather
as we hold each other tight
As our rivets rub together
flashing sparks into the night
At this moment of surrender darling
if you really care
Don't touch me there [....]"

Its interesting that there was another Jack Armstrong but this time as a talk radio host on KNEW 910 and KFTY 50 in 2003 under the Armstrong and Getty show. I heard of Jack Armstrong (ex- KFRC and KKHR) returning to WKBW in Buffalo in 2003 30 years after his first stint in the 1970's before he died in 2008.

The Jack Armstrong from A&G has used the name since he was a solo jock in Western Ks, and then when paired with Joe Getty as AC jocks in Wichita. I don't think he had Jackson in mind, he is just one of the many radio folks that wasn't blessed with an easy to recall and pronounce last name. Having known him and Joe for quite a while now, that's just my take. When we speak next, I'll ask him.
