Former Owner of WKNU Brewton, Hugh Ellington Passes

Although I am out of the country, I received word tonight (Zagreb Croatia time) that Hugh Ellington, former owner of WKNU in Brewton died over the weekend. I received a call on my cell phone from Hugh's wife Carol to let me know...there will be a memorial service in about 2 weeks....when I get the details, I will post them. I had done engineering work for Hugh and Carol for many years (and still do work for the new owner of WKNU). Hugh has had some health problems for the last year or so. He will be missed. RIP Hugh !

Thanks for letting us know, Charlie. I got to meet both -- one by phone, one in person -- and I'll pay them the highest Southern compliment by saying they are good people.

Croatia? I suspect that instead of chasing deer, you're over there chasing DX. As I write this I'm listening to a random Zagreb stream that is blasting a reggae show ("Radio 101"). The world is indeed a small place these days.

Take care,

You are right Paul....chasing DX....Radio 101 is one of the big independent radio stations here but they are now just a shadow of themselves in their hay day back in the early 90s after Croatia became a separate country from Yugoslavia (aka Serbia). The economy hit them hard several years ago and their staff of 30 plus is now down to less than 10 from what I hear.

Ellington's involvement in Alabama radio history goes beyond WKNU. At one time he was half of the Vogel-Ellington broadcasting group ... their flagship station was WHOD in Jackson ... seem to remember they also owned 1340 Selma, and others which I can't recall. Anyone remember the other Vogel-Ellington stations?

yes I remember seeing some stuff around WKNU about WHOD....I remember Hugh talking about it about 10 years ago....but I can't seem to remember how we got off on that track.
