The legendary Jackson broadcaster and former restaurant owner was killed in an accident on I-220 this afternoon. He was driving northbound in the southbound lanes and was involved in a head-on collision. He was 93 years old.
Anyone who grew up in the 70's proabally watched his show on TV. Back when stations had local variety shows. One of the funny things I remember was that his show was sponsers was from a beer company and many of the acts he had on his show were gospel groups, which he would often joke with the guests and apologize on the air about doing a plug for beer right after someone sang a gospel song. His fried chicken wasn't bad either.
Here is an article about him. He was also on WOKJ back in the day. http://www.my601.com/news/local/sto...ident-in/PZArzXSgDU6fs8at2n-7hw.cspx?rss=2331
My thoughts go to the family of friends of Jobie Martin. I remember growing up in Jackson in the 50s and 60s. Jobie was one of the stars, if not THE star, of WOKJ on 1590.
I had the pleasure of meeting Jobie Martin a fews years back when he did a radio interview with Kim Wade on WJNT. I remember him saying that he always made it a point to be well dressed and well spoken. As J. Boyd said... he knew how to be a gentleman.
Sorry to hear this. I remember watching him doing a live beer commercial and he popped it open. Apparently the camera man was waving his arms or something because Jobie looked up and said "Don't worry Mr. cameraman. I'm not going to drink it. I just wanted to get a scent from it. And man does it smell good."
