Fox News Celebrates 10th Anniversary Amidst Ratings Slump

An interesting story from the AP:

NEW YORK - Fox News Channel will mark its 10th anniversary this week in an unusual position: knocked back on its heels.

The network is in the midst of its first-ever ratings slump. Cable news' most stable lineup is being juggled. And the blow-up over President Clinton's interview with Chris Wallace suggests that Democrats are attacking Fox because they perceive the same vulnerability in the network as they do in the Bush administration.

Anyways, nothing lasts forever. I don't watch the cable news channels. Too much garbage IMO, although I'd say Fox is 4th worst following behind MSNBC, CNBC and CNN Headline News.

The only reason the AP would post a story like that is that they are whining about FNC's taking over for the liberal elites who run the media. Then again, the AP will now be infamous for screwing up the death of the man who wrote the novelty song "Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polkadot Bikini." But there are more even serious problems with the Dis-Associated Press.

Those on the left are just JEALOUS that Fox has leveled your monopoly on the left along with Talk Radio and the blogs--unless you support Kos, Democratic Underground, etc.
 
If Fox is biased toward the right, the AP is nothing more than a house organ for the liberal wing of the Democratic party. This story just proves it.

The story tries to highlight ratings losses at Fox on the network's 10th anniversary. What is glossed over in the story is the fact that all the cable news nets are down because last year's ratings were artificially high due to Katrina and the Hurricanes.

Barely mentioned was the fact that Fox is still number one by a wide margin.

In television news, Fox is a distant fourth, behind ABC, CBS, and NBC.

The thirdplace network, CBS, has more viewers watch its half hour newscast in one night than Fox has cumulative viewers all week.

I never said the Fox News Channel beat ABC, NBC or CBS' evening news programs. This discussion is strictly about cable news channels.
Your stat is a good one, but doesn't go far enough. The CBS Evening News has slipped back to 3rd in the news race - but it probably has more viewers each night than all three of the cable news channels combined in a week.
 
Excuse me, you said Fox is in first place.

The cable versus broadcast distinction meant something 10 years ago, when Fox availability was limited.

Fox is a fringe player, just like CNN. Neither is a popular mass media, when looked at in terms of the number of people watching.
