My 12 in Charlotte is only My 12 because most cable systems put it on 12. Its analog and PSIP channel number is 55.
Not sure what you are trying to say here Chimp but the vast majority of TV viewers have no idea what a "PSIP" is and if they did it would confuse the hell out of them. Since the 1940's TV stations have been using their "channel numbers" as a brand and also a way of tuning them on the TV. After the digital conversion it was way easier to keep using the legacy channel number even though, in most cases, it didn't mean anything (except to the software on a digital set who knew analog 12 really meant digital 55). Oversimplified. Still a meaningless number that drives internal software to figure out where the viewer really wants to go.
But using the channel number as a brand is what TV stations have been doing from the outset.
We have an interesting situation here in Phoenix though. Channel 3 (indy) bought Channel 5 (CBS) and now applies their brand "Arizona's Family" to both services. This really gets confusing when one is tuned into Channel 5 news and the Channel 3 logo is displayed.
