The cartoon that made Fox TV, marches on. Not even "out of ideas" or weak scripts can stop it.

In related content, Fox is now down 20.9% in adults 18-49 (thru week 7)....the most of any
broadcast network (or entity that signs off at 10 PM). Stats are from TVbythenumbers, who
also estimate that broadcast TV as a whole is down 4.2% this year.

This begs the question.....is grandpaw Simpson programming Fox now?

Do you actually READ TV by the Numbers? Because, if you did, you'd probably see that The Simpsons still ranks as #16 in the highest rated show. You may not like it anymore, but nearly 5 million people 18-49 still do.

The only other scripted show on Fox that does better is Family Guy So, if I'm Fox, I'd be smart to hang on to The Simpsons, as long as they continue to agree to make shows.

Looking at the very same site you reference, seems like The Good Guys, Lone Star, Running Wilde, Lie to Me, and Fringe, are more to blame. All of which are either new shows or less than 3 years old.

So, wanna come up with a new punching bag that actually has some logic in it?

Fox could also be down to a short World Series, the Yankees not being in the World Series, and early start time for game 3 of the World Series, and no American Idol on the air yet. They also wont have the premiere numbers for 24 either this year.

Looking at the very same site you reference, seems like The Good Guys, Lone Star, Running Wilde, Lie to Me, and Fringe, are more to blame. All of which are either new shows or less than 3 years old.

IMHO the quality of Fringe has gotten better, but it is in a tough time slot. Still one of my favorites.

I still watch House, Lie to Me, and Bones, but I have the strong feeling that those shows are running out of gas. The new House-Cuddy relationship may help sink that show, while it seems as the writers of Bones are now grasping for script ideas, not to mention that the relationship between the lead characters seems to be going nowhere after six seasons. Lie to Me is falling victim to some tedious, even bizarre scripts and acting.

Not sure American Idol is going to help things. I think people are finally getting bored with the concept.

Oh I agree that timeslots can make or break a show. I still (even though I'm probably grasping at straws) think that Chuck would do much better if it wasn't up against House, How I Met Your Mother, and Dancing with the Stars. As it is, I'm a fan of both House, and the CBS Monday block, so Chuck is relegated to watching another day on Hulu (because I only have a two tuner DVR). Whereas Tuesday and Wednesdays for me are now relatively open.

Agree with you on House though, seems to have lost something (although it looks like they are trying to put it back together watching last week's episode). Couple that with the loss of 24, and the addition of a sitcom block on Tuesdays (which I want to see succeed, personally, Raising Hope has become one of my new favorite shows), and the poor performance for LoneStar, which belongs on FX, and you get a pretty dim picture indeed.

Where I take issue with is the assumption that Saturday or Sunday are the culprits of Fox's demise. Both nights do pretty well for Fox. I don't care for Cops or AMW at all, but I can't deny that they are still a success. I've hated American Idol since day one, and don't really care for Glee either, but again, looking at it from a business perspective, it's hard to deny that these are cash cows for Fox.

I'm not blaming The Simpsons for the problems at Fox, but the fact that a 23 year old show
which is NOT HALF OF WHAT IT ONCE WAS is your 2nd highest rated show, is a sad statement indeed.

Is it really necessary to grind a program into the ground and thus diminish it into fodder? There is
a point where it's best for the show (and network) to just let go and MOVE ON.

I don't think a 20th season of M*A*S*H* would have been 1/10th of what the 5th season was, but there probably would have been 5 million people out there who would have watched and enjoyed that 20th season anyway.

I say after the 25th season of the Simpsons the show should part ways with FOX.
