Fox Sports on 2014 and 2016 Olympics: We'd show 'everything live'

Doesn't matter - NBC's Number One Olympics fan (Ebersol) is making his way to the sidelines...

Fox definitely has the power to pull off showing all of the events live. I do wonder if some of the events will end up on unorthodox channels like, say, Speed.

Or worse -- Fox News Channel.

Don't think FNC would show anything, even though MSNBC has. FBC probably would however.

What would be really odd is if ABC got the rights, and some of the games aired on Disney channel, but I guess the 5 or so ESPN networks would probably be enough, and even then they have ABC family before they would need to consider using one of the disney channels.

NBC usually uses 5 networks (NBC USA MSNBC Oxygen and CNBC) for their coverage, but they've used Universal Sports or started up short term channels for more extensive coverage.

So using that as a base ABC/ESPN would probably use ABC, ESPN, ESPN 2, ABC Family, and ???? Some choices: ESPNU, Disney, ESPN Classic and ESPN News.

The problem then would be (and I'm sure ESPN could find a way to work around it) existing contracts with the pro and college leagues.

FOX could use National Geographic Channel as that is under News Corp. But would they use that channel?

As for NBC they now have Versus which is a great channel to air the Olympics.

Let's assume for a moment that NBC/Comcast is not going to seriously compete for these rights. (and that seems more likely now that Ebersol is gone) Fox and ESPN have been engaged in a series of battles for sports rights lately (primarily over college football) but this one is the one they've both been waiting for. The IOC wants whoever wins this to not force them to hold events at weird times just to satisfy the prime-time demands of the US televison rights holder. NBC clearly does not want to do that. If they lost 200 million on the vancouver games when many events were in prime time, image how much they might lose if they had to air those events in the less watched afternoon or morning hours. Fox and ESPN just don't care. They'll take the olympics wherever they can. They're willing to lose money on it because it adds promotional value for other programming after the olympics.

Disney Channel would ensure more basic cable carriage than the ESPN family options.

Come to think of it, an ABC-ESPN win would almost surely mean live online streaming on a CTV level with ESPN3...

I think if ABC got it, it would go down like this.

ABC, ESPN, & ESPN 2 of course.

The next 2 would probably be ABC Family since its in just about as many homes as ESPN, and then ESPN news would be the 5th network, with Olympic news when no event. Maybe ESPNU, but I think they're on sports packages in many markets.

ESPN classics i'm not sure is in HD, or if it is isn't in many markets. So that might rule them out.

FOX is a harder one to figure out, since they don't have that many channels, atleast with a large amount of carriage.

Fox/FX is a given. Speed would probably be the 3rd network, Fox business I think would be the 4th. I guess NGC could be the 5th. They could even use big ten network, but i'm not sure if they 100% own that.

Don't think they would use Fox news (espeically in 2016 -an election year), even though NBC used MSNBC. Fox news for better or worse is just too big of a channel to preempt programming for 2 weeks.

The other fox channels such as fox movie, NGC worldwide, or fox college sports all aren't in many markets (Don't think fox movie channel is in any comcast market) or are in sports only packages.

Isn't Turner Sports interested also?

Networks they can use are: TNT, TBS, TruTV, HLN (of course because CNN would stay news and wouldn't show any coverage)

But that would imply that CBS would be ponying up some of its own money to partner with Turner for Olympics coverage, yes? It's not like the Turner cable nets are owned by CBS. (Yet, anyway...)

The Olympics on CBS. I believe the last time they had Olympic coverage was the 1994 Winter Olympics (a.k.a. the Kerrigan Club Series). I remember those bits with Letterman's mother live from Lilliehammer as if they were on just last week.

(Scratch that... CBS and TNT shared rights to the 1998 Winter Olympics from Nagano.) The Peacock would retain full Olympic coverage in the "new millennium" with the 2002 Winter Olympics from Salt Lake City.)
