FOX SPORTS RADIO (SORRY, BUT THIS IS VERY SAD AND A SIN) SORRY

I always thought Bruce Jacobs was very entertaining because you couldn't possibly take everything he said seriously (a Jets fan in PHOENIX?) but you could also tell he truly enjoyed his work.

I'm sorry, I still say Fox Sports Radio Programming Management should bring back Big Ben Maller on weeknight overnight, even if they have to change it a little bit, and also bring back Chris Plank who was there weekend overnights. It's very sad what they did.
I'm sorry, I don't mean to say the bad things, but what they did was bad.
I am thankfull they still have John Fricke, Sean Farnham, and Deb Carson. I wish they would have Hacksaw Hamilton on.

Fox Sports Radio: a network of unfulfilled potential since December 9, 2002 (the date Kiley & Booms was broken up).

Bruce Jacobs got fired from his local station in Pheonix. Next step, Fox Sports Radio Network should fire him as well and bring back Big Ben Maller and Chris Plank overnights, as well as put on Hacksaw hamilton more often.
Sorry to say bad things, please forgive me.
It's just very sad that they let the good people go

I was listening to Bruce on Sunday night and rediscovered why I enjoy sports talk radio.

His comments about an overreliance for today's managers on pitch counts was spot on. And his commaraderie with the rest of his staff spoke of a great conversation with friends.

Bruce might be my favorite syndicated sports talk show host.

How can you all like a radio host who yells at his listenners? How would you like if someone yell at you like that?

You all think that's right?

That's disrespect and ignorant

How can I respect a poster who doesn't have a grasp on the english language? ;)

The thing about Jacobs is that he might be critical, but you can usually tell when he's yelling he's got a smile on his face. When he picks on the Miami Dolphins, it's somewhat comical. It isn't all that mean spirited.

Furthermore, somebody mentioned Pete Franklin earlier. Franklin once pointed out the difference between himself and a "nice guy host," as he described it.

Nice Guy Host- Where are you calling from?

Caller- Gary, Indiana.

Host- I hear it's lovely in Gary this time of year (!). What did you want to talk about?

Caller- I was thinking about all-time great shortstops.

Host- That's interesting.

Caller- I think Jerry Dybzinski was the best I ever saw.

Host- Well, you've certainly given us something to think about. Thank you for calling.

Compared to-

Caller- I think the Indians should make a trade.

Pete- Who do you want to get?

Caller- Well, I'd like to get Eddie Murray.

Pete- And how do you propose doing this?

Caller- Well, I was thinking maybe Pat Tabler and . . .

Pete- PAT TABLER FOR EDDIE MURRAY?

Caller- Something like that.

Pete- Does your hometown have a bridge?

Caller- Yeah.

Pete- Go jump off it.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now, the thing here is while Pete Franklin was obviously rude, what was more entertaining to read and would be more entertaining to hear?

Jacobs is something of an old school host. Back in the day, lots of hosts, especially sports talk hosts, were attack guys. Joe Pyne in Los Angeles was one of the first real radio talk show hosts in the country- his catch phrase was "Go gargle razor blades."

Franklin was huge in that pre-ESPN era. He could be heard across the country on WWWE's 50,000 watt signal and usually was. I think the ratings once had one in every four men in Cleveland listening to him.

You can still see a bit of this today; Jim Rome's schtick, Mark Madden's wrestling heel persona, and even Bulldog Briscoe's arrogance on "Fraiser."

Jacobs is not as mean-spirited as any of these guys. To be yelled at by Jacobs is akin to being called a hockey puck by Don Rickles- whereas the other guys I've mentioned were really trying to put their callers down.

FSR is only worth listening to any more only from 6-9am ET. The only good thing that came out of those changes was getting rid of that Out of Bounds show.

I cannot believe still that do Soup from 11Pm Pacific to 3 AM Pacific time, They are telling wast coast listeners we do not want to talk about your teams Games,

That's okay, we have Meyers & Hartman and Petros & Money to cram LAKERS AND DODGERS down our earholes for a straight 6 hours during the weekdays.

I realize what I'm saying only dovetails with a small portion of this thread, but I'd like to buy a beer for everyone who thinks that Sam Batesh (sp?) is the radio equivalent of sand in your swimtrunks.

With every hackneyed soup-themed reference he spits out of his piehole, I inch ever closer to the tuning knob of my radio. My listenership to Fox Sports Soup wouldn't even be necessary if my local affiliate hadn't ditched the superb Steve Czaban Show with the unlistenable twaddle that is Mancow's Morning Madhouse. So if I'm going to get my Daily Czabe, I've got to somehow grit my teeth and tolerate the idiocy of Sam Batesh.

Near as I can tell, the idea of referring to this type of daily best-of programming as "soup" came from the E! Network's old show "Talk Soup." But Greg Kinnear, John Henson, et al, had a witty, barb-filled, humorous way of introducing and wrapping up the segments. All we get from Batesh is a gush of mindless idolatry, seemingly rooted in the belief that he might advance to a greater position at Fox Sports Radio if he spends enough time licking the boots of Petros & Money.

Never mind that, in months of listening, I've yet to hear any evidence that Betesh really owns any significant knowledge of sports. It might not be a prerequisite to hosting a clip show, but come on. This is sports radio. Jim Rome nicely boils down what he looks for in a caller: "Have a take, and don't suck." Betesh finds a way to violate both of those simple rules.

I'll take a Root Brewski, if you don't mind. BEST analogy ever.

Great analysis of "Talk Soup" (don't forget successor shows "The Soup," "The :DISH" and "Web Soup," which all follow the same formula). If it was true that KLAC's PD had Talk Soup in mind when he thought up Fox Sports Soup, he needs to be thrown off of a railing like Phil Hartman "did" to Greg Kinnear. (For those that never saw that Talk Soup sketch, it was the greatest of all time :))

In one year or so, FSR will likely go live in the overnights with a cheap alternative (along the lines of Chris Moore) and Betesh will be totally forgotten. I betcha most people don't listen to him right now anyway, as FSR threw away the time slot and disregarded the audience. All that's needed right now is Romey's "run" buzzer.

A clip show isn't "bad..." as long as its' a weekend program. Not every night.

I don't get how you can do a clip show when the only 2 shows worth it on your network aren't produced by the network

ESPN does 2 clip shows.....early weekend mornings, one day it's Mike & Mike and the next it's a best of ESPN...i think some affils also carry a best of Cowherd too
