Fox Sports The Gambler on 1480 WDAS/102.5

I wanted to give the new format on WDAS-AM an official post. Post your continuing thoughts and opinions here for further discussion.

Personally, I think it'll be seriously interesting to hear how Philly's fourth sports talk station will try to position themselves. Considering it's sports betting talk, this is new to all of us.

Godspeed, WDAS-AM.

Quite true, but the concept as a whole is a bit unique. At least it's not just a straight up FSR station 24/7 with no local programming.

Goodbye 'Breakthrough'. Not surprised. I'm guessing CHoP wasn't getting a lot of profit from 1480/102.5.

This new flea powered entity won’t be generating much more. What is it, 3 out of 24 hours 5x a week that’s local?

More power to em, but this seems like a really low value bet, so to speak.

Love the line in the Inquirer story that he's not taking calls for the local show. Seems like it would be more likely they'd get robocalls than actual calls.

Only doing this so Fox shows can get clearance in Philly.

If you consider New Castle County, Delaware County, Southern Chester County and the southern edge of Philadelphia as "Philly" then the shows already cleared on 1290 WWTX in Wilmington. Plus North Philly, Bucks, Mercer, and parts of Burlington Counties on 920 WNJE from Trenton. They could have already claimed they were heard "in Philly" meaning the Philly market. Now they have a Philly proper signal.

That's pretty funny and probably wise. It'd be embarrassing to keep giving out a number to call in and no one calls.

Not only that, but you know that most of the calls are going to be "who should I bet on." and that kind of thing, and that's a bad place for a radio host to go. Everything has to be couched in "there's no sure thing," and "we're not responsible if you lose money."

It will take a while for the show to build up the audience where he can expect to have enough calls. Until then, he needs to do enough show prep that allows him to carry it by himself.

I heart should take 1480 and light up on fire....1480 its just a bad signal. No matter what they put on that signal its not going to work. I heart is just playing with different formats until they find a format that works, same thing they did with 106.1 the breeze...but I really don't see this taking off on 1480....I might be wrong but I'll bet next year around this time they will have a different format on the air.

Neither 1480 nor 102.5 is going to reach more than the old Mr. Microphone toy (being a bit facetious but you get the idea).

But that’s what iHeart has at its disposal. So, they’re throwing something at it.

If I were placing a bet on a year or so hence, I’d put more money on the local show being toast vs. another format. But there’s a reason I don’t place bets—I’m wrong way too often.

I'd probably put money on the same outcome. But then again, I'm not a gambler...which is partially why I literally won't ever hear this new station.

Well, we're now living with WDAS-AM 1480/ 102.5 The Gambler.

Two take home points. One- 102.5 is now in mono- to allow less static for better listening. Two, the audio on both the FM and AM is pretty baseline. Very soft on the ears. The hosts are nothing to write home about.

I'll make a quick recording of the new stations to add to my archive.org site. (ps check it out here- https://archive.org/details/@atrainradio)

They should just simulcast Y102 from Reading and synchronize the transmitters. Then the areas getting interference from both stations will no longer get interference.

I see any FSR affiliate that can snag a nearby casino starting a show like this. One of the few ways to squeeze new revenue out of these challenged signals.
