Say it ain’t so, Joe. Fox Sports announcer Joe Buck said today that NFL broadcasts on his network will use recordings of crowd noise and fake images of fans in the stands if the league’s games are barred from having real fans attend.
Buck made the revelations while talking to Andy Cohen on the Sirius XM show Radio Andy. He said using those deceptive tactics was a “done deal” as the network preps for an NFL season that may be played in empty stadiums because of the pandemic.
“I think Fox and these networks have to put crowd noise under us to make it as normal a viewing experience at home,” Buck said. “I know they’ll do it.”

I understand why the sports divisions have to include them its to keep the games exciting in the era of COVID-19 uncertainty and also when the leagues have to deal with the rumors of second wave. Also the leagues have to comply with state laws involving crowd size though. Also the leagues have to make up for league pass deals too.

I'm OK with it too under these unprecedented circumstances. I hope a second wave can be avoided, but science has been right most of the time so far. My real fear is what will happen when people who've had a taste of a reopened country get their states shut right back down again. What that would do to sports -- aborted football season? -- is the least of my concerns. Although I am curious what might happen to my MLB.TV (internet, not cable) subscription. I paid $125 for it at the end of February and so far have gotten 2 1/2 weeks of spring training games out of it. What if there's a shortened season that only lasts a week or so before the second wave locks the nation up tight again and we all start waiting in our private prisons waiting for a vaccine?

How do they propose to cover up the booth window when the announcers backs are turned to it as is normally the case at the start of the game?? That's going to be kinda hard to HIDE (Let alone FAKE !!)

Maybe the announcers will be back in the studio in New York, their images superimposed on an empty booth in the stadium. ESPN is covering KBO baseball from Bristol, Connecticut.

Let's see how Fox deals with NASCAR on Sunday.

A person could get an idea or two from how this first race back works out.
 
The thing about NASCAR is that there is very little crowd reaction audible over the race cars, so there's no expectation of crowd reaction among the audience.
I don't think they will CGI the stands today to make them look full.

There are links to buy tickets on MLB.com for games at Dodger Stadium and Miller Park this coming week. You and I both know there will be no games in LA or Milwaukee this week, much less games with fans.

The NFL has not admitted that there will be no fans. My guess is that if the government will let teams have fans in Atlanta or Dallas or Tampa Bay, games will be played with fans in those cities.

But from what the governors and other officials have said, it looks very unlikely that LA or SF or NY or Chicago will permit sporting events with fans this fall. Many other places have not tipped their hand yet.

My guess is no vaccine, no cure, no fans -- for however long it takes, unless the virus somehow becomes less a global pandemic and more a seasonal regional nuisance. (And even then, there are going to be hundreds of thousands, at least, who will never agree to vaccination because of religious beliefs, conspiracy theories or plain old skepticism. So are vaccination certificates to become required for admission to sports and other public venues?) What if the virus defies the best medical minds and becomes a permanent part of our world? That's a doomsday scenario for much more important aspects of our lives than professional sports.

And a friend and I were talking about going on a bro-cation to Philly in October to see The Philadelphia Eagles play The New York Giants. (That is if, I find employment by then).

There is no way to social distance 70,000 people in a stadium. Cutting the attendance by 2/3's would leave season ticket holders bitching.

It works for "Wait! Wait!" on NPR.

I was watching "Weekend Edition" on the last two SNL episodes and it just wasn't as enjoyable for some reason. I was looking for information about those episodes and was reminded Colin and Michael did their news reports on Zoom, so we did hear laughter from their friends. It was sort of metallic, though.

I tend to agree - they will show the lack of bodies in the grandstands simply as telling that perspective of the story.

Yes, there's no longer 70,000 fans watching the contest live for the near future, but that's part of the attraction. Use of the other senses while watching a race in person is a big part of the attraction for some.

A telecast of the race can't provide those other sensory actions that come with watching a race.

The broadcast team NOT being at the track will bring another dimension to how it's presented today.

It will be an interesting experiment to witness.
