FOX to NASCAR-Phoenix:" Just a little longer"...NASCAR-Phoenix to FOX:---

"Lets Go Racin, Boys!"

2 out bottom of the ninth, FOXs rain delayed Yanks-Red Sox game disappeared from FOX over the air stations to be replaced by regularly scheduled NASCAR coverage.

Yes, sister station FX had the baseball outcome...Just a shock when I saw the picture jump.

Wow. The mighty Joe Buck gets bump drafted by NASCAR...oh, the wound to the ego..

Re: FOX to NASCAR-Phoenix:" Just a little longer"...NASCAR-Phoenix to FOX:---

Just heard about this from my friends who were watching the game and they were shocked that they switched it for the beginning of the race.

Re: FOX to NASCAR-Phoenix:" Just a little longer"...NASCAR-Phoenix to FOX:---

It did switch all of a sudden even if it was implied that they'd wait till that last out got made. (The race
announcer may as well have said:) Oh, yeah,
if you were watching that very tight baseball game it got switched to FX. No, I don't know what the
channel number is in your town, folks, and for those without cable, tough...

Re: FOX to NASCAR-Phoenix:" Just a little longer"...NASCAR-Phoenix to FOX:---

Couldn't Fox have done a split screen or does that violate the contract they have with
Not Another Stupid Car Accident Race?

Re: FOX to NASCAR-Phoenix:" Just a little longer"...NASCAR-Phoenix to FOX:---

I was half listening and thought they said that the race would start after the end of the game (i.e.,
they'd hold off the start of the race till the end of the game, though I'd be surprised if NASCAR
would have agreed to that!)

We interrupt the end of this exciting Red Sox-Yankees game to bring you the first inning of
some minor league game. Which is more important? How about the END of the game trumping the
beginning, esp. if it's a close game? (Tonight's movie: Heidi :) )

Also, as Boston Sports Media pointed out, shortly after going to the race they then went to a commercial!
Run the ads a couple minutes late if you have to but show us the end of the game!

If you monkeys were listening to the announcer they kept saying the game was on FX. FOX Coverage would end at the start of the race. They cut off Terminator 3 as soon as The Rain Delay Ended.

Forgive me, but this Monkey just happened to tune in at that particular moment. I watched the game briefly early on, and figured that I could see them play many more times this year, so I turned off the set.

I'm wondering what discussions went on between race officials and FOX, and why didn't FOX play it safe and keep the game on FX...oh, wait. Its the Yankees and Red Sox..THATS why....

(Bruce writes: "However, it would’ve be nice to a) have gotten a warning that the feed was about to switch and b) if FOX hadn’t gone to a commercial almost immediately upon switching to race coverage."_

There are a couple of things in your post I'd like to address.

First, they did not go to commercial "shortly after going to to race." The commercial came when the race went under caution approx 4:30 after the switch. The baseball game was over by that point (I had the picture-in-picture going). Fox can't control when a caution is going to come out in NASCAR.

Second, Fox is contractually obligated to show the green flag, with a seven-figure penalty for pre-empting it. Actually, NASCAR held the start of the race by about 10 minutes to try and avoid conflicts, but ultimately, they have to worry about putting on their show first, especially with 110,000+ fans at the track.

Third, the comparasion of NASCAR being a "minor league game" is not even remotely accurate. Fox Saturday Baseball averages around a 2.2 national rating. NASCAR races on Fox to this point have averaged a 5.8 (Thanks, http://sportsmediawatch.blogspot.com/), at least double the rating of baseball. If you're Fox, you're making twice as many people mad by bumping NASCAR, so you move baseball and make the largest number of viewers happy.

Re: FOX to NASCAR-Phoenix:" Just a little longer"...NASCAR-Phoenix to FOX:---

The least they could have done is a slide or a voiceover "FOX now joins the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series" for three seconds in between ...

Fox may be liable for that penalty anyway; they joined about ten seconds after the dropping of the green.

I was surprised to turn on the TV and see the baseball game at all, seeing that they began NASCAR coverage about 7:30 EST.

Re: FOX to NASCAR-Phoenix:" Just a little longer"...NASCAR-Phoenix to FOX:---

Yes I was exaggerating by comparing the NASCAR race to a minor league game, but it still would have been nice if Fox could have done a split screen to show both (prob. not feasible legally though).

Re: FOX to NASCAR-Phoenix:" Just a little longer"...NASCAR-Phoenix to FOX:---

For those that wern't paying attention, Joe Buck made it VERY clear numerous times,
Fox would be joining the race for the green flag and FX would finish up the game.

They also had the notice on screen.
If Posada had just swung and missed they wouldn't have had the problem in the first place. :)

Decisions at Fox.

a. stay with the game and risk a six figure fine?
b. switch a early season game to FX?
c. go with split screen and also risk BIG fine from NASCAR?

I choose 'b."

Re: FOX to NASCAR-Phoenix:" Just a little longer"...NASCAR-Phoenix to FOX:---

But if I chose "B", I'd schedule short-length programming (like sitcom reruns) insead of films, and I'd provide ample warning to FX viewers, instead of an abrupt cut to the game.

Re: FOX to NASCAR-Phoenix:" Just a little longer"...NASCAR-Phoenix to FOX:---

It was the Yawnkees vs the Red Sux. What's the big deal???

Go D'backs!!!! ;D

Re: FOX to NASCAR-Phoenix:" Just a little longer"...NASCAR-Phoenix to FOX:---

Hmmmm, greatest rivalry in baseball versus staring at a bunch of cars going 'round and 'round and 'round.......

I'd love to see the raw numbers on how many millions of viewers flipped the channel in New York and Boston (alone). Let's see, trade viewers in top 10 markets for that all-important audience in Tuscaloosa, AL and Valdosta, GA. Yeah, they're the same thing as a big market.

Nice move Fox. ::)

NASCAR ratings routinely trounce baseball regardless of the rivalry. You want to see outrage from the fans? Let them miss ONE lap of a NASCAR race in favor of another tired baseball game....

Re: FOX to NASCAR-Phoenix:" Just a little longer"...NASCAR-Phoenix to FOX:---

What are we talking about? Yanks and Sox vs. NASCAR?
You'd have a better argument if it were a playoff game between the two teams, even a game 7.

But a rain delayed, early season, ho-hum game like that? Easy call for FOX. (aside from the fine of course)

The real question would be, what would they have done if this was an NFL game going up against a NASCAR race?

Debate indeed!

Re: FOX to NASCAR-Phoenix:" Just a little longer"...NASCAR-Phoenix to FOX:---

It'll never happen. Fox has the early season NASCAR package.

Re: FOX to NASCAR-Phoenix:" Just a little longer"...NASCAR-Phoenix to FOX:---

And that's precisely why Fox didn't make a play for the late season package and NASCAR didn't take a bid from CBS.

Re: FOX to NASCAR-Phoenix:" Just a little longer"...NASCAR-Phoenix to FOX:---

You shouldn't say "Yanks and Sox" because nobody knows if you are referring to the Chicago White Sox or Boston Red Sox. I know that people around Boston refer to their team at the "Sox", but people around Chicago also refer to their team as the "Sox". Furthermore, the hat and home jersey of the White Sox reads just "Sox", but the uniform of the Red Sox does not read just "Sox".

Regarding the start of the race, I thought it was strange that Fox missed the waving of the green flag. The first lap was about 90% complete when they made the switch. If they were going to miss the beginning of the race anyways, they should have waited for the inning of the baseball game (Yankees and Red Sox) to finish.

Re: FOX to NASCAR-Phoenix:" Just a little longer"...NASCAR-Phoenix to FOX:---

Yankees vs Red Sox= Rivalry????? nah, not anymore. It's just a game during the regular season, just that the media hypes it to be a boxing match everytime they play each other, notice how when the first set of games are about to be played they call it Round 1 and the next set Round 2 and so forth. The race, well whenever there is a show or event to be televised, for example, let's say that the game started at 4:00 pm and FOX was schedule to show an award show or something that was slated to start at 7:00 but the game was delayed due to weather, if the weather does not clear up after 7:00, then FOX is contractually obligated to leave the game and televise the next show.
